Volumes housed in a modern custom-made red cloth clamshell box with gold lettering on spine. Striking collection of 40 tissue-guarded engravings depicting views of important places mentioned in scripture and drawn from nature by Johann Martin Gernatz. Each plate measures appr. 6 1/2 x 9 2/8" and is accompanied with an original text by Gotthilf Heinrich von Schubert. Due to a printer's error the last plate mentioned in the first volume Berg Tabor is instead in the second volume. All plates are present including the large 3-page fold-out panoramic view of Mount Sinai. Sporadic rubbing and minor creasing along edges of wrappers. Some closed tears to spines. Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Fold-out detached but present. Text in German. Clamshell box in overall very good wrappers in fair to good interior in good to good plates in very good condition. Gotthilf Heinrich von Schubert 1780-1860 was a "German physician and naturalist who began his studies with theology but turned to medicine and established himself as a doctor in Altenburg Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. He soon gave up his practice however and devoted himself to research in Dresden. He gave renowned lectures on fringe science animal magnetism clairvoyance and dream and in 1819 he occupied the chair in natural history in Erlangen where he studied botany forestry mineralogy and geognosy. In 1827 he moved for the last time to Munich where he was appointed professor; it was here that the highly popular and friendly Schubert found an embittered opponent in Lorenz Oken. Schubert aimed to create a religiously-grounded interpretation of the cosmos. His masterpiece "Symbolism of Dreams" 1814 was one of the most famous books of its time exercising influence over E. T. A. Hoffmann and even Sigmund Freud and C. G. Jung. Schubert advocated an ecumenical "awakened Christianity" which found evidence for God both in Nature and in the human soul. Synthesising the Bible with the philosophy of Schelling he was a major figure in the "later Enlightenment". In his "History of the Soul" 1830 Schubert again attempted to fuse the philosophy of Herder and Schelling with the Christian tradition." From Wikipedia. J. F. Steinkopf unknown

Red linen spine with lithographed front cover. In very good condition with a touch of marking and rubbing only. Slight bumping to the corners. Small area to the front cover with an old tape repair not particularly noticeable. Inside the thirty plates are in very good condition. Slightly darkened to the edges only. The plates are held in the binding by hinges and a few of the plates have been re-set / reinforced in position. Overall an excellent example. 320 by 210mm 12½ by 8¼ inches. Intended for the visual instruction of young people in schools and families. From the series: "Naturgeschichte des Tier- Pflanzen- und Mineralreichs in kolorirten Bildern nebst erläuterndem." . Première édition. 16 pages de texte 1 table des matières et 30 doubles pages de photos en couleurs. Dos en lin rouge et couverture lithographiée. En très bon état avec quelques marques et frottements seulement. Les coins sont légèrement abîmés. Une petite zone sur la couverture avant avec une ancienne réparation de ruban adhésif pas particulièrement visible. A l'intérieur les trente planches sont en très bon état. Légèrement assombries sur les bords seulement. Les planches sont maintenues dans la reliure par des charnières et quelques planches ont été remises en place / renforcées dans leur position. Dans l'ensemble il s'agit d'un excellent exemplaire. 320 x 210 mm 12½ x 8¼ pouces. Destiné à l'enseignement visuel des jeunes dans les écoles et les familles. In seinem Werk 'Die Symbolik des Traumes' sagt Gotthilf Heinrich von Schubert 1780-1860 "wenn der Mensch eingeschlafen ist beginnt die Seele in einer «Bildersprache» zu sprechen im Gegensatz zur Wortsprache des Wachzustands. Es kann vorkommen daß beide Sprachen eine Zeitlang nebeneinander her fließen oder sich vermischen; aber im eigentlichen Traum bleibt nur die Traumbildersprache übrig. Sie ist eine «hieroglyphische» Sprache in dem Sinn daß sie viele Bilder oder Vorstellungen zu einem Gesamtbild zusammenfügen kann. Die Träume bedienen sich auch einer universalen Symbolsprache die bei allen Menschen auf der ganzen Welt gleich ist bei uns wie bei den «Wilden» auf Neuseeland und die ebenso für die Menschen vergangener Zeiten gilt wie für uns. Die Traumbildersprache ist «eine höhere Art von Algebra»; sie nimmt zuweilen politische Eigenschaften an manchmal ist sie ironisch wie z.B. in Träumen wo das Bild der Geburt in Wirklichkeit Tod bedeutet oder wo Exkremente Gold bedeuten. Nachts wird die menschliche Seele manchmal fähig Zukünftiges in Bildern vorauszusehen aber häufiger hat der Traum einen amoralischen und dämonischen Charakter weil die vernachlässigten verdrängten und vergewaltigten Aspekte der Persönlichkeit zum Vorschein kommen. JUNG 'Archetypen'." Gotthilf Heinrich von Schuberet 1760-1860 war von 1819 bis 1827 Professur der Naturgeschichte an der Universität Erlangen danach an der Universität zu Erlangen. Er beeinflusste mit seinen Werken die Brüder Schlegel Kleist und E.T.A. Hoffmann. Ein Teil ihrer romantischen Dichtungen legt davon Zeugnis ab. Third and best edition on one of the leading works on dream before Freud. The philosopher G.H.Schubert 1780-1860 developed the idea that the language of the dream is wholly symbolical. He declared that when man has fallen asleep his mind starts thinking in a "picture language" in contrast to the verbal language of wacking life. Schubert's study of dreams was one of the sources for Freud's work on dreams and it is cited in his bibliography of his classical work on interpretation of dreams.
