1952217461952. Oil Extraction and Oil Well Fires in South Texas. Three silver gelatin black-and-white photographic prints including one gelatin silver press photo 8 x 10 in. and two photo prints from negatives 5 x 7 in. Dated 1952 and 1954. Content includes an image of a wildcat rig in Lavaca County Texas and dramatic scenes of oil well fires. All photos with extensive manuscript notations on verso including references to press filing. This small but gripping photo archive documents the volatility and danger of oil drilling operations in mid-century South Texas including one catastrophic blowout and fire. The 8 x 10 inch silver gelatin press photograph dated June 1954 and stamped "RETURN TO CHRONICLE FILES" shows a towering oil derrick rising above dense trees. The reverse identifies the location as Lavaca County and describes a wildcat operation in Hallettsville Texas where drilling reached 8000 feet. A hand-written note reads "Field Drilling Co. Ext. Exterior - cementing protective casing 10240 down to 8000 ft - Lavaca County 2 1/2 mi. N. Hallettsville."<br /> <br /> The two smaller prints-captioned in manuscript as "Oil Well Fires"-capture the momentous force of an uncontrolled eruption. One image shows a roiling column of black smoke and flame rising from a well site surrounded by distant silhouettes of onlookers. Another more closely framed emphasizes the explosive power as the plume expands over nearby treetops. A note on the verso dates one of these prints to October 1952 stating it is a "Print from Studio of late Cecil Thomson." Cecil Thomson 1881-1953 was a prolific Houston-based commercial photographer and photojournalist who operated Thomson Studio a major supplier of images to regional newspapers including the Houston Post and Houston Chronicle. His studio active from 1909 until his death in 1963 continued producing prints posthumously from its extensive negative archive making it likely these fire images were developed and distributed under the studio's imprint even if not taken by Thomson personally.<br /> <br /> All three photos are from the Houston Chronicle archives with two stamped or inscribed "Return to Chronicle Morgue." One image includes the notation "Sunday Oil - Lavaca County Wildcat." These images preserve both the ambition and peril of mid-century oil operations in Texas a period when wildcat drilling fueled economic speculation and technological innovation often with great human and environmental risk. Surface creases and light wear to edges; verso of each image shows editorial markings and annotations in grease pencil and ink. Overall very good condition. A vivid visual record of the oil industry's volatility in 1950s Texas with provenance from the Houston Chronicle press files. unknown

194010977no place: ESSO / Standard Oil Company 1940. Staplebound. Fair-good. Octavo 32pp. illustrated. A fair to good copy in the publisher's stapled wraps. Page block while intact is separated from the wrappers and laid in. Some stains juvenile pencil writing and chips and short tears to extremities but a complete readable copy. A volume of recipes purportedly by "Aunt Julia" an "Aunt Jemima"-style stereotype of a Black female cook this volume was almost certainly written or compiled by white staff of the Standard Oil Company. A ehite box on the front wrap contains the details of Wisenhunt's Esso Station in Spartanburg South Carolina. Likely these kinds of cook books were sold at various Esso stations throughout the American south and elsewhere. Though probably produced in large numbers we located just a handful of separately listed holdings in OCLC. Though undated there are a few advertising images of automobiles whhich were cetainly produced before World War II. Uncommon. [ESSO / Standard Oil Company] unknown

The text contains an amusing if dangerous sounding origin story for the company in which the founding officer ignites a brook covered in a "peculiar scum" and spooks his horse. The remainder of the text contains the usual inducements to invest including various descriptions statistics analyses and endorsements. The first commercial well in New Mexico was drilled in the early twenties and we find little additional information on the Eureka Oil Company. One other copy located at SMU. unknown

Buckman 1913-1995 who at the time was stationed on the USS Northampton CL/CA 26 US Navy Cruiser sunk later in 1942 at the Battle of Tassafaronga repelling Japanese from reinforcing troops on Guadalcanal. First edition of this scarce and beautifully rendered pictorial map celebrating the very successful California Pacific International Exposition held in San Diego over two years at the depths of the Great Depression to revive the Southern California economy which featured a number of unusual concessions and exhibits such as the Gold Gulch Lost Continent of Mu the Zoro Garden Nudist Colony and the “One Ton Mechanical Man.†Several of the exhibits used at the recently closed Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago 1933-1934 were re-used for the CPIE. This map reminiscent of the work of Jo Mora looks Eastward from a high point above the Pacific Ocean depicting San Diego from La Jolla to Oneonta and inland up to Cuyamaca Dam. Many of the buildings developed the architect Requa’s 1881-1941 “Southern California Architecture†style drawing upon the historical architecture of the Colonial Mexico the Pueblos of the Southwest and the Moorish features from Spain and North Africa and preserved the popular buildings which are still evident in Balboa Park. Bloodgood 1896-1989 was an illustrator cartoonist and map maper who produced a substantial body of pictorial maps from 1935-1968 for Shell Oil and the Pic-Tour Guide Series with this one being distributed from the Shell Building exhibit at the CPIE. 1902106482<p>Rectangular 8vo 9½x5¼" pamphlet 1 11 leaves printed on rectos only original brown paper wrappers red ribbon tie at top. A little normal aging but otherwise near fine. This is an early Standard Oil piece that appears to be designed to promote the stock which according to this brochure consisted of only 2500000 shares. At the time of publication the par value was only $1 per share. The brochure discusses various oil field potential and on the inside back cover is a "no wild cat" illustration hyping the stock. This was printed well before the 1911 breakup of the company for violating the "Sherman Antitrust Act." A wonderful piece of corporate memorabilia. OCLC locates only a single copy at the University of Wyoming.</p>

Offshore oil rig construction photographs of marine industrial labor and heavy equipment operations at the Port of Galveston Texas undated showing how Gulf Coast petroleum infrastructure was assembled through coordinated crane work deck staging and vessel support. Made by an unidentified worker contractor or site observer with direct access to the platform and adjoining work areas the group records the operational system behind offshore petroleum expansion rather than only the finished structure: derrick components rising between lattice boom cranes machinery positioned on crowded deck surfaces workers monitoring equipment from railings and platforms and service craft moving below the job site. Within the history of Gulf Coast oil and gas development these images preserve the waterfront and offshore construction process through which drilling and extraction infrastructure entered service in one of the chief locations which allowed Texas entry into national and international trade.<br /> <br /> <br /> Photo archive of 17 silver gelatin snapshot photographs each about 3.5" x 5" also includes 18 negative images 35 mm Port of Galveston Texas circa 1960s-1970s. The prints concentrate on a single marine construction environment with repeated views of tall lattice cranes a derrick or drilling tower under assembly steel framework catwalks railings deck mounted machinery and industrial piping. Several photographs move between wide and close vantage points: one looks down onto a work deck strewn with cables drums tools and structural members; another isolates a crane boom overhead; others frame the rig against open water with a small service boat alongside. Two views show a worker in coveralls standing at the railing and looking across the site; in one image the patch on his back reads "Farmers Marine Copper Works Inc. Petro Chemical Marine Galveston Texas" directly tying the group to a named Galveston industrial contractor. Another figure in light clothing appears deeper in the structure. Interior or semi enclosed machinery views include a hopper shaped component rollers and processing equipment. The accompanying negative strips are marked and the original photo processing envelope survives with printed instructions preserving the group's original commercial processing context.<br /> <br /> <br /> Galveston's port facilities formed part of the larger Gulf Coast industrial network that supported offshore petroleum construction marine transport and heavy fabrication across the twentieth century and this group fixes that system at deck level through workers machinery staging practices and support traffic in the water below. Light wear curling and handling to prints and negatives; processing envelope creased and worn. Original tweed-patterned white vinyl padded 20-ring binder engraved silver plate mounted lower front corner minor soiling shelfwear thumbing to covers occasional creasing on some of the images glue offsetting on paper backing leaves behind the photos still a VG exemplar. This remarkable souvenir photo album documents the safety efforts and operations of the Shell Oil Shellburn Oil Refinery located on Burrard Inlet in British Columbia. Shell’s original refinery was constructed in 1932 but by the end of World War II the Canadian economy’s demands for oil products resulted in a substantial expansion which added thermal cracking distillation stabilization U.O.P. catalytic polymerization of stabilizer overhead gas gasoline refining and gasoline sweetening units. The refinery applied a number of new refining techniques perfected during the war to produce high-grade gasoline from high-pour waxy straight-run residue. Gardiner worked not only as public relations and safety inspector for the refinery but also as petroleum engineer. The album begins with large photo by W.T. Davis & F.B. Hughes of On-the-Spot Photographers with Gardiner showing three young girls the details on an oil refinery model which had been developed by Shell and Standard Oil of California in order to promote interest in the petroleum industry. This is then followed by birds-eye images of the refinery operating on the Burrard Inlet in the 1950s earlier images before and after expansion after World War II executive offices oil workers in frigid temperatures with icicles hanging off the equipment in the background large Shell Oil safety sign recording how many days since last industrial accident in the refinery in 1954 as well as awards ceremonies and banquets. Of interest is a particularly nice image towards the end of a Shell Oil Executive fronted with large Shell advertising sign and behind large architectural rendering of 1950s Shell service station with signage and Shell Oil tanker pulling into the station. A few of the photographs were by Donn and Warner Williams the Williams Brothers who served as aerial photographers in the R.C.A.F. during World War II and then established their Williams Bros. Ltd. Commercial Photo lab in 1948 in Vancouver BC. On-the-Spot Photographers operated by W.T. Davis and F.B. Hughes from 1945-1955 maintained studios at 520 Sixth Ave. and later 2124 London St. in New Westminster British Columbia. 191775579Powell WY: Southern Montana Oil Company. 1917. Original silver gelatin photograph measuring measuring 39 x 10 inches caption in the plate in white. Small stain to the blank upper margin else very good.First of all we have to love this photograph for having a man with his arms outspread placed in the very middle of the image. It bespeaks a person very exalted to be present in a deserted and beautiful landscape. Southern Montana Oil Company incorporated on October 30 1916 and had established offices in Missoula Montana by 1917. All of its directors came from Anaconda a region known for its copper deposits. The directors I.W. Walker A.F. Mavity R.A. Cobban F. Shannon and T.P. Stewart decided to pursue petroleum riches in southern Wyoming.By April 1917 the new exploration company was drilling wells in the Elk Basin oilfield which crosses the state line between Carbon County Montana and Park County Wyoming. The giant Elk Basin field has a dramatic history of its own as noted in First Wyoming Oil Wells. Southern Montana Oil successfully completed a well that produced 25 barrels of oil a day.y November 1917 company manager George L. Means reported to Colorado’s Fairplay Flume newspaper that drilling operations were getting underway on eight 40-acre tracts near Meeteetse Wyoming once a hideout for outlaw Butch Cassidy. Drilling commercially successful wells proved elusive however and by 1921 Southern Montana Oil Company stock was offered at only two cents per share. After the company failed its stock was described in subsequent inheritance litigation as valueless.The photographer A. G. Lucier was one of the first in the area. He opened his photography studio in Powell in 1909. He was later hired by Tex Holms to be the photographer of his famous 18-day tours of Yellowstone Park. He was also published heavily in the local paper the Powell Tribune. He also tried his hand at motion pictures filming 25000 feet of film at the Pine Ridge Agency. For his work in the Elk Basin Columbia University sent him a congratulatory and flattering letter. By 1920 he and his wife had set up a stand near the current Buffalo Bill Visitor's center and sold photographs of the dPark and it fauna andflora to tourists. Southern Montana Oil Company. unknown

Written two decades before the discovery of oil the Middle East the last and longest publication describes an almost unrecognizable oil production. "It will be noted that the United States and Mexico together produced over 87 per cent. of the world's output in 1921 " p. 13. Under the header "Arabia" follows one of the shortest descriptions only stating that "Indications of oil are known on the Farsan Islands in the Red Sea where drilling has been unsuccessful. On the Persian Gulf coast of Arabia indications of oil occur in the neighbourhood of Basra and near Koweit. The art was produced by an unknown artist who worked the 1940s for the advertising agency Foote Belding & Cone which represented some of the biggest clients in the world.
