1933521Chicago: H. M. Gousha 1933. 23 1/4 x 17 1/2 inches. Very good condition. This is a highly decorative Depression Era map of the United States. The design on the front cover is a modest view of getting gas at the pump. A uniformed attendant puts the gas in the back of the sedan. The verso of the map is filled with panels of attractive people and the friendly servers of Gulf gasoline clearly marked on the pumps. There is a lubrication chart that lists the different automobile makes in 1933. What an expanded selection with names like Auburn Cadillac Cord Durant Hupmobile Isotta-Fraschini Locomobile Pierce-Arrow Stutz and Willys among many others. There ia also a transcontinental mileage chart. This is a fun piece highlights by a superb graphic presentation of the map of the United States. H. M. Gousha unknown

195952165Vancouver BC: Shell Oil of British Columbia On-The-Spot-Photographers Williams Brothers Feb. 1 1959. 4to. 44 pp unpaginated 12 pages on bonded paper w/ signatures 32 pages of two-sided mylar sleeves with white & black paper inserts for photographs with 76 original and studio photographs inserted into sleeves sized from 2.5 x 2.5 in. up to 8 x 10 in. nearly all originally glued with adhesive to backing papers but now just laid-in to mylar sleeves a few w/ photographer’s stamps on versos. Original tweed-patterned white vinyl padded 20-ring binder engraved silver plate mounted lower front corner minor soiling shelfwear thumbing to covers occasional creasing on some of the images glue offsetting on paper backing leaves behind the photos still a VG exemplar. This remarkable souvenir photo album documents the safety efforts and operations of the Shell Oil Shellburn Oil Refinery located on Burrard Inlet in British Columbia. Shell’s original refinery was constructed in 1932 but by the end of World War II the Canadian economy’s demands for oil products resulted in a substantial expansion which added thermal cracking distillation stabilization U.O.P. catalytic polymerization of stabilizer overhead gas gasoline refining and gasoline sweetening units. The refinery applied a number of new refining techniques perfected during the war to produce high-grade gasoline from high-pour waxy straight-run residue. Gardiner worked not only as public relations and safety inspector for the refinery but also as petroleum engineer. The album begins with large photo by W.T. Davis & F.B. Hughes of On-the-Spot Photographers with Gardiner showing three young girls the details on an oil refinery model which had been developed by Shell and Standard Oil of California in order to promote interest in the petroleum industry. This is then followed by birds-eye images of the refinery operating on the Burrard Inlet in the 1950s earlier images before and after expansion after World War II executive offices oil workers in frigid temperatures with icicles hanging off the equipment in the background large Shell Oil safety sign recording how many days since last industrial accident in the refinery in 1954 as well as awards ceremonies and banquets. Of interest is a particularly nice image towards the end of a Shell Oil Executive fronted with large Shell advertising sign and behind large architectural rendering of 1950s Shell service station with signage and Shell Oil tanker pulling into the station. A few of the photographs were by Donn and Warner Williams the Williams Brothers who served as aerial photographers in the R.C.A.F. during World War II and then established their Williams Bros. Ltd. Commercial Photo lab in 1948 in Vancouver BC. On-the-Spot Photographers operated by W.T. Davis and F.B. Hughes from 1945-1955 maintained studios at 520 Sixth Ave. and later 2124 London St. in New Westminster British Columbia. It opens with a list of Middle East oil companies and their concessions accompanied by a map showing their oil fields followed by a section on the future of Middle East oil. Individual chapters are devoted to the oil industry in Iran Iraq Bahrein Saudi Arabia Haifa Israel and Kuwait describing the area's geology oil fields reservoirs and more illustrated with photographs and cross-sections of the soil. The first 25 and last 16 pages consist of advertisements. On March 25 1969 the President created a Cabinet Task Force to conduct a comprehensive review of oil import restrictions; requested the Secretary of Labor to assume its chairmanship; named as the other members the Secretaries of State Treasury Defense Interior and commerce and the director of the Office of Emergency Preparedness; and added observers representatives of the Department of Justice Bureau of the Budget Council of Economic Advisers Office of Science and Technology Policy Office of the Special Trade Representatives and Federal Power Commission. Two of the members Secretary of the Interior and Secretary of Commerce did not associate themselves with this report and filed separate views. The Chairman of the Federal Power Commission also disassociated himself in full from the report and joined the two dissenting members in their expression of separate views. Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes advocated the stockpiling of emergency crude oil in 1944. President Truman's Minerals Policy Commission proposed a strategic oil supply in 1952. President Eisenhower suggested an oil reserve after the 1956 Suez Crisis. The Cabinet Task Force on Oil Import Control recommended a similar reserve in 1970. But few events so dramatically underscored the need for a strategic oil reserve as the 1973-74 oil embargo. The cutoff of oil flowing into the United States from many Arab nations sent economic shockwaves throughout the Nation. In the aftermath of the oil crises the United States established the SPR. President Ford set the SPR into motion when he signed the Energy Policy and Conservation Act EPCA on December 22 1975. The legislation declared it to be U.S. policy to establish a reserve of up to one billion barrels of petroleum. The Gulf of Mexico was a logical choice for oil storage sites. More than 500 salt domes known to be an inexpensive and secure means of petroleum storage are concentrated along the coast. Also the Gulf Coast is the location of many U.S. refineries and distribution points for tankers barges and pipelines. In April 1977 the government acquired several existing salt caverns to serve as the first storage sites. Construction of the first surface facilities began in June 1977. On July 21 1977 the first oil - approximately 412000 barrels of Saudi Arabian light crude - was delivered to the SPR. Fill of the Nation's emergency oil reserve had begun. U. S. Book A very good copy of the first post-war edition of the guidebook including the map which has seen very little if any use. The "Fourth Edition" reflects the fact that this is the fourth guidebook that was issued. The Third Edition was published around the start of World War II in 1939. As the Foreword notes "For four years little or no maintenance was carried out roads previously good fell into disrepair bridges were bombed and destroyed and opposing armies constructed new highways" p. 1. The folded map printed in black and red opens up to 13" wide by 20" high. Roads are marked in red and designated "all weather" "fair weather" and "unclassified." Places with petrol pumps are underlined in red. The map is in excellent condition with three creases in the margins and only one 1/4" tear at the outside edge of one of the folds. WorldCat shows two entries for the book OCLC #250091811 and #19666339 with a total of only 16 libraries including the Department of State's Ralph J. Bunche Library the U.S. Transportation Department Library the Library of Congress and the British Library. Size: Around 7" or slightly taller - Duodecimo 12mo. 121 pages. Item Type: Book. The text block is tight and unmarked. None of the many Notes pages have any entries. The thin cheap paper has browned from age but is in good condition. The last three leaves have a 2" diagonal crease at the bottom corner not reaching the text. Green paper wrapper that has browned around the edges from age. About 1/8" of the upper right corner of the front cover is missing. The first and last pages are glued to the front cover so the first page is tight and the rear cover is creased where the page is no longer glued in probably because of the weight of the map that is in a pocket on the inside rear cover. Written two decades before the discovery of oil the Middle East the last and longest publication describes an almost unrecognizable oil production. "It will be noted that the United States and Mexico together produced over 87 per cent. of the world's output in 1921 " p. 13. Under the header "Arabia" follows one of the shortest descriptions only stating that "Indications of oil are known on the Farsan Islands in the Red Sea where drilling has been unsuccessful. On the Persian Gulf coast of Arabia indications of oil occur in the neighbourhood of Basra and near Koweit. First edition of this rare internal report on Iranian oil production commissioned by the Iranian Oil Exploration & Producing Company and the Iranian Oil Refining Company 4 years after the nationalization. WorldCat lists only 3 institutional copies at Princeton Durham and Berlin. Established in 1951 and restructured in 1954 the National Iranian Oil Company owned the Iranian oil facilities collaborating with a consortium of foreign companies to sell on the international market. This report is a summary of the first year of the consortium's activities. It discusses the background of the Iranian oil industry the exploration and drilling of the Iranian Oil Exploration & Producing Co. the activity of the Iranian Oil Refining Company administration and the oil industry revenue. Like the Durham and Berlin copies the present does not include Appendix C 1 leaf graph of monthly oil production and the loose list of illustrations maps and photographs listed in the Appendices section. The text contains an amusing if dangerous sounding origin story for the company in which the founding officer ignites a brook covered in a "peculiar scum" and spooks his horse. The remainder of the text contains the usual inducements to invest including various descriptions statistics analyses and endorsements. The first commercial well in New Mexico was drilled in the early twenties and we find little additional information on the Eureka Oil Company. One other copy located at SMU. unknown
