Here Hendrik Antoon Lorentz Became His Formative Teacher. On March 26 1908 He Received His Doctorate Under Lorentz With The Topic Toepassing The Statistical Mechanica Van Gibbs Op Molekulair-Theorien Vraagstukken On The Molecular Applications Of The Gibbs´Schen Statistical Mechanics To The Doctor Of Natural Sciences. He Then Became An Assistant To Lorentz And Went In 1909 As A Lecturer In Physics At The University Of Groningen Which Task He Began On April 29 1909 With The Introductory Lecture De Rol Der Wiskunde In De Mathematic Physica German: The Role Of Mathematics In Mathematical Physics . In 1914 He Succeeded Peter Debye As Professor Of Physics At Utrecht University . As Head Of The Physics Laboratory In Utrecht From 1922 He Also Turned His Attention To Experimental Investigations In Particular Intensity Measurements Of Spectral Lines And Thus Gave The Institute An International Reputation. In 1921 He Was Significantly Involved With The Head Of The Philips Natuurständig Laboratorium In Eindhoven Gilles Holst In The Founding Of The Dutch Physical Society Nederlandse Natuurständige Vereniging Of Which He Was Chairman In 1939/1940. In 1931/32 He Was Rector Of The University Of Utrecht For Which He Gave The Rectorate's Speech In 1932 De Beteekenis Der Natuurkunde Voor Cultuur En Maatschappij German: The Importance Of Physics For Culture And Society . Ornstein Became A Member Of The Royal Netherlands Academy Of Sciences Corresponding Honorary Member Of The Royal Physiographic Society In Lund And Knight Of The Order Of The Dutch Lion. After The German Occupation In 1940 As A Jew Who Was Also Active In The Zionist Movement He Was Chairman Of The Dutch Zionist Association From 1918 To 1922 He Was In Great Danger But Refused To Leave The Country Despite Offers From Friends. Like All Jews In The Netherlands He Was Removed From Public Office And Was Not Even Allowed To Enter His Laboratory In Utrecht. Ornstein Then Isolated Himself From The Public And Died A Little Later. His Body Was Buried On May 23 1941 At The Jewish Cemetery In Utrecht. Ornstein Is Best Known For His Work In Statistical Mechanics. Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman Frs 1888 -1970 Was An Indian Physicist Known For His Work In The Field Of Light Scattering. Using A Spectrograph That He Developed He And His Student K. S. Krishnan Discovered That When Light Traverses A Transparent Material The Deflected Light Changes Its Wavelength And Frequency. This Phenomenon A Hitherto Unknown Type Of Scattering Of Light Which They Called "Modified Scattering" Was Subsequently Termed The Raman Effect Or Raman Scattering. In Addition To Being A New Phenomenon Itself The Raman Effect Was One Of The Earliest Proofs Of The Quantum Nature Of Light. Robert W. Wood At The Johns Hopkins University Was The First American To Confirm The Raman Effect In The Early 1929. He Made A Series Of Experimental Verification After Which He Commented Saying "It Appears To Me That This Very Beautiful Discovery Which Resulted From Raman's Long And Patient Study Of The Phenomenon Of Light Scattering Is One Of The Most Convincing Proofs Of The Quantum Theory". The Field Of Raman Spectroscopy Came To Be Based On This Phenomenon And Ernest Rutherford President Of The Royal Society Referred To It In His Presentation Of The Hughes Medal To Raman In 1930 As "Among The Best Three Or Four Discoveries In Experimental Physics In The Last Decade".Raman Received The 1930 Nobel Prize In Physics For The Discovery And Was The First Asian To Receive A Nobel Prize In Any Branch Of Science. With Suri Bhagavantam He Determined The Spin Of Photons In 1932 Which Further Confirmed The Quantum Nature Of Light. With Another Student Nagendra Nath He Provided The Correct Theoretical Explanation For The Acousto-Optic Effect Light Scattering By Sound Waves In A Series Of Articles Resulting In The Celebrated Raman-Nath Theory. Modulators And Switching Systems Based On This Effect Have Enabled Optical Communication Components Based On Laser Systems. Other Investigations He Carried Out Included Experimental And Theoretical Studies On The Diffraction Of Light By Acoustic Waves Of Ultrasonic And Hypersonic Frequencies And Those On The Effects Produced By X-Rays On Infrared Vibrations In Crystals Exposed To Ordinary Light Which Were Published Between 1935 And 1942. In 1948 Through Studying The Spectroscopic Behaviour Of Crystals He Approached The Fundamental Problems Of Crystal Dynamics In A New Manner.104105 He Dealt With The Structure And Properties Of Diamond From 1944 To 1968 The Structure And Optical Behaviour Of Numerous Iridescent Substances Including Labradorite Pearly Feldspar Agate Quartz Opal And Pearl In The Early 1950S. His Scientific Work Includes The Proposal Of A Unified Field Theory That Brings Together The Weak Force Strong Force Electromagnetism And Gravity. Sachs Earned His Bachelors At The University Of California Los Angeles He Then Moved To Columbia University New York For Postgraduate Study. While At Columbia Sachs Was Taught By Willis Lamb And Hideki Yukawa.5 Yukawa Had Agreed To Be Sach's Thesis Advisor But Sachs Decided To Complete His Doctorate Back At Ucla. Following The Award Of His Phd In 1954 Sachs First Post-Doctoral Position Was At The New University Of California Radiation Laboratory At Both Berkeley And Livermore Which Was Run By Edward Teller And Ernest Lawrence And Was Also Home To Bryce Dewitt Who Sachs Would Later Co-Author Articles With In Physics Today. In 1956 Sachs Became A Senior Scientist At Lockheed Missiles And Space Laboratory While At Lockheed Sachs Began Developing With Solomon Schwebel A Field Theory Of Quantum Electrodynamics That Included Broken Symmetries That Did Not Require Recourse To Renormalization Or Perturbation Techniques - The "Schwebel-Sachs" Model. In 1961 He Became A Research Professor At Mcgill University; This Was Followed By A Post As Associate Professor Of Physics At Boston University 1962-1966. In 1964 While At Boston University Sachs Received An Invitation From Paul Dirac To Visit Cambridge University. Sachs Stayed In England For Three Months Where His Wife Yetty Had Family. Sachs Worked With Paul Dirac At The Department Of Applied Mathematics And Theoretical Physics Cambridge University. While Working With Dirac Sachs Also Had The Opportunity To Discuss Ideas With John G. Taylor John Polkinghorne And Graduate Students At Damtp. In 1965 Sachs Had Had A Breakthrough While At The Aspen Physics Institute Colorado. Sachs Was Able To Derive A Result For A Unified Field Theory If Quantum Mechanics Was Considered To Be A Linear Approximation For A Field Theory Of Inertia Expressed In General Relativity. Sachs Argued That The Work Of Albert Einstein And Erwin Schrödinger In General Relativity Did Not Yet Take Account Of The Inertia Of Matter Which Required Consideration Of The Mach Principle. The objective of the publication is to communicate the work performed at the Laboratory to its sponsors and to the scientific and engineering communities defense establishment academia and industry. Founded on March 10 1942-just three months after the United States entered World War II-APL was created as part of a federal government effort to mobilize scientific resources to address wartime challenges. APL was assigned the task of finding a more effective way for ships to defend themselves against enemy air attacks. The Laboratory designed built and tested a radar proximity fuze that significantly increased the effectiveness of anti-aircraft shells in the Pacific-and later ground artillery during the invasion of Europe. The product of the Laboratory's intense development effort was later judged to be along with the atomic bomb and radar one of the three most valuable technology developments of the war.
