John Snow 1813-1858 of London was the first qualified physician to devote his full time to anaesthesia. Through his medical training he was interested in gases and when news arrieved from America in late 1846 that surgery could be performed painlessly by inhailing the vapour of ether he began his practice in anesthesia and his investigations. Since the first attempts to produce anesthesia in England with ether were inept some distrust of the method developed. Snow believed it was the technic of administrations and procceeded to remedy the situtation by developing an improved inhalter. Thenceforth the administration of ether was successful. Snow was not only a praticing anesthetist but being endowed with intellectual curiosty he was also a teachter and an investigator. Snow reported his new inhaler mask to the Westminster Medical Society. In addition he appreciated the need for measuring the ammount of agent administered the significance of oxygen lack the problem of carbon dioxide; and for the guidance of clinicians he divided the progress of anesthesia into five stages. All this material and carious researches were gathered into a monograph in October 1847. It was entitled "On the Inhalation of the Vapour Ether". It was and is a rare classic. Today there are only six original copies extant." 1899350London: Ernest Nister 1899. Fair only with contents separated from stapled wrapper dustjacket with staining closed tear and significant separation and 1899 gift inscription. A scarce 8-page printing on cardstock of Massachusetts author Sophia P. Snow's poem which was first published in 1884 tells the story of two young children on Christmas Eve who had lost their mother and whose father had lost Christmas in his heart and which features Santa Claus.<br /> <br /> Of note this volume contains an early example of a dustjacket. Black printed paper Title label to upper board VG and 'Price 10d'. Covers generally Good Plus to VG minus - a few marks and with some small loss to the head and foot of the spine - loss now coloured in to match and hardly noticable as the covers are now in a new protective clear - removable - bookfilm plastic cover and look Very Good overall. Page fore-edges 'toned' as usual with age and the dust of well over one and a half centuries! Front inner hinge splitting but sound. Internally 4 iv 160 pp. Publisher's single sheet lists of books in this series pasted on to the front and rear pastedowns - stating on the rear list "In preparation to be published early in 1849." . Endpapers plain lemon. 1848 at the foot of the Title page and Preface by the author dated 1848. NO Inscriptions or any marks that I can see. Black and white line drawn full page Frontispiece together with b/w line and monotone illustrations in the text. "Sir William Snow Harris 1791-1867 was a British physician and electrical pioneer and researcher and noted for his invention of a successful system of lightning conductors for ships." .
