1865180002London: Judd and Glass 1865. First edition of this unrecorded report on Britain's first medical institution devoted to the care of women. It was founded in 1842 by Protheroe Smith a pioneering obstetrician and the first physician in London to administer chloroform in childbirth. The Soho Square "hospital embodied moral and social views about the 'special' nature of femininity" and was guided by Smith's 1810-1882 fervent evangelical beliefs Moscucci p. 75. It was distinguished by its closed-wards policy: "This was a pledge to debar medical students from the wards of the new hospital which was no doubt intended to secure public support for the project: ever since men-midwives had entered the lying-in chamber the suspicion that obstetricians violated women's modesty had proved one of the major obstacles to the advance of the male practitioners of midwifery" Moscucci p. 82. Women were also able to stay longer in Soho than at general hospitals allowing it to more effectively treat chronic and work-related conditions. Although the hospital was originally met with scepticism and concerns about morality in the ensuing decades its reputation improved to such an extent that it was able to secure royal patronage this report recording its present supporters as Alexandra Princess of Wales and Mary Adelaide Duchess of Cambridge. They were later joined by Queen Victoria herself who donated £500 in 1885. Small octavo. Original green printed wrappers. Photo is in good condition with light scuffing to photo surface two water marks in bottom left quadrant and some dirt and stains to the image border. Light crease in top left corner and small tear on lower right edge. Image remains crisp and clear. Joseph Hippolyt Pulte 1811-1884 was born in Meschede Westphalia Germany. He was educated in the gymnasium of Sost and received his medical degree at the University of Hamburg. He followed his brother Dr. Hermann Pulte to this country in 1834 and practised in Cherrytown Pennsylvania but became a convert to homoeopathy and took an active interest in forming the homoeopathic academy in Allentown Pennsylvania which was closed in 1840. He then removed to Cincinnati Ohio. In 1844 he founded with others the American Institute of Homoeopathy in New York city and in 1872 he established in Cincinnati the medical college that bears his name where he was professor of the science of clinical medicine. In 1852 he was made professor of the same branch at the Homoeopathic college of Cleveland and he served as professor of obstetrics in 1853-'5. He contributed to various homoeopathic journals was an editor of the "American Magazine of Homoeopathy and Hydropathy" in 1852-'4 and of the "Quarterly Homoeopathic Magazine" in 1854; edited Teste's " Diseases of Children" translated by Emma H. The concept of medical police is quite interesting in the context of urban social history. The "police" focused on everything for occupational hazards to prostitution abandoned children and public safety such public alcoholism and toxins and poisons that could be an immediate hazard to public heath. David Hosack was noted American physician but remains "widely known as the doctor who tended to the fatal injuries of Alexander Hamilton after his duel with Aaron Burr in July 1804" His second wife was the wealthy widow of the merchant and shipowner Henry A. Coster and brought $300000 and seven children from her earlier marriage into the Hosack household. The newfound wealth enabled enabled Hosack to live and entertain lavishly- the splendor of his parties was the talk of the town and he built an opulent baronial estate on the Hudson. His fortune was lost in 1835 as a result of a sweeping fire that bankrupted insurance companies he was invested in and he died that year with the financial stress contributing to his rapid decline. <br/><br/>OCLC Number:1029959092. A lengthy paper by Dr Patrick Manson the future founder of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine describes the symptoms and treatment of the condition for ten of his cases. WorldCat records two copies worldwide National Library of Australia and Manson's medical school. Advertised here are numerous Kickapoo medical products and recipes and remedies for dread diseases. Parasites constipation dyspepsia inflammatory rheumatism and many other ailments are cured by following the Kickapoo path to health. <br /> The Book explains that "The womb is the seat of all 'Female Weakness'." The cure is the Kickapoo salve "applied directly to the seat of the trouble." The paramount importance of the cure is emphasized: "AS ARE THE MOTHERS SO IS THE NATION." Printed by Gebrudt ben Christian Jacob Hutter. A scarce book representative of those published by early German settlers in Pennsylvania. Hutter b. 1771 in Germany lived in the Netherlands where his father 'worked as a tanner and leather manufacturer for the Moravian brethren. Christian Jacob was sent to the American settlement of Bethlehem in October 1789.' He became a newspaper publisher and moved to Easton PA where he published several newspapers. The first is an autograph letter signed and dated 16 March 1893. 1 page handwritten on National Homeopathic Medical College of Chicago letterhead from the desk of W. M. W. Davison M. D. 9 x 5 ¾ in. Excellent condition with two horizontal fold lines. Davison writes in part: "Miss Cowles Kindly I wish to congratulate you for your most excellent paper." This letter also comes with a business card from W. M. W. Davison again dated March 16th 1893 which verifies that "Miss C S Cowles has passed the examination in Histology and Physiology and her standing is 90 in the former and 100 in the latter."<br /> <br /> The second is a typed letter signed and dated January 24 1896. 1 page on The People's Health Journal letterhead from the desk of editors L. D. Rogers M.D. and Ida Wright Rogers M.D. two married doctors. 8.5 x 11 in. They write:<br /> <br /> "Miss Clara CowlesEl Dorado Kas.<br /> Dear Miss Cowles:--<br /> Your favor of the 17th. together with your first examination papers came duly to hand. We have returned the papers. They were excellent. <br /> We thank you for the names of your two friends and will write to them. Let us hear from you often. <br /> Yours very sincerely Drs Rogers & Rogers"<br /> <br /> Very good condition with two vertical fold creases and one horizontal one at center. Small tear at upper left crease. Comes with a joint business card for Drs. Rogers & Rogers and inscribed in pencil on verso is the address for Dr. E. S. Reed Dentist. Four more inscribed business cards from doctors are included. One of the cards is from Dr. E. S. Reed and has a neat inscription on verso in ink declaring that Miss C. S. Cowles "has a standing of 98 in Dental-Surgery for the session of 1892 & '93" signed by E.S. Reed Professor of Dental Surgery. Interesting 19th century correspondence related to a young woman's medical education and those who offered her professional support and encouragement. unknown
