Based on the play "Matilda Shouted Fire" by Janet Green. Nominated for an Academy Award. Shot struck and mounted by the film's still photographer Bob Willoughby with a manuscript notation on the verso in his hand. Full provenance available. <br /> <br /> After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles photographer Robert Willoughby began working for magazines such as "Life" "Look" and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. He spent the next 20-plus years as a set photographer for every major studio and magazine with his images seen in print literally every week of his career. Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington DC and London the Bibliotheque Nationale de France The Museum of Modern Art and The Tate Modern. <br /> <br /> 14 x 11 inches. As the first pro-gay journal of its kind it serves as an important source for pre-Stonewall homophile studies. In 1954 the US Post Office declared it obscene leading to a four-year legal battle chronicled in its pages that concluded with a favorable decision as part of Roth vs. United States. Head of spine worn with small loss to cloth small splits to foot of spine rubbing to corners. Gutters between page 16 and facing colour plate and at back endpaper cracked with webbing exposed but binding holding firm. Small loss to edge of page 11 and 2 cm tear to bottom edge of pages 25/27/29 does not affect text. Fox spotting to title page and in places in text. Some dog-eared corners and creasing to pages. Pages discoloured with marks in places. A scarce book with only five copies listed on Copac. Not ex-library. No names notes or inscriptions. 64pp. All books are individually described.
