Dr. Loeb abandoned his hope in free will. He studied how life could be manipulated by science if only the operative mechanisms could be identified. He proposed that theory thirty years earlier but this work - especially chapters 5 - 13 and 16 are based entirely or in part on new experiments. He was an outstanding bioloigist and physiologist who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in 1901. He and Osterhout founded the Journal of General Physiology. With 42 illustrations. J. B.
