This splendid large panoramic advertising photo offers a superb example from a hustling commercial photographer between the World Wars in the Pacific Northwest. Thayer marketed his talents to the wealthy upper classes in the Portland area by offering beautifully hand-coloured large display photographs of their businesses impressive homes interiors and exteriors and even offering Christmas cards and calendars to send to their friends business associates and family as a specialty. Famed for his coloured photographic images of bucolic 1920s log cabin homes tucked away in forest glens he has captured the broad green fields rolling hills of this historic dairy best known for their locally grown â€œGolden Guernsey Milkâ€ products. Founded by Eckelman 1885-1966 a German-American immigrant and his brother Paul before World War I the Fairview Dairy became well known for itsâ€™ glass-lined inslulated tanks sanitizing plant and efficient service. In the 1970â€™s Fairview Farms joined the Mayflower Farms dairy cooperative and the brand disappeared. No examples located in Worldcat or other collections. Many captioned; Brown Brothers and Santa Fe Passenger Dept stamps verso. Conditions vary; very good plus to Near Fine. Alfalfa came to the western United States from South America during the California gold rush era and spread east from there. It is primarily grown as feed for livestock. Offered here are fourteen photographs and one negative showing alfalfa cultivation around the US in locations including California New York Missouri Arkansas the Dakotas Minnesota and others. Those photos that have dates are dated between 1908 and 1929. From the archives of the Brown Brothers agency likely their whole file on the subject we can say with certainty this is one of the largest assemblages of press photographs of alfalfa that one is likely to encounter. Miner celebrating and promoting his improvements and vast expansion to the family Chazy Dairy Farm largely funded by Miner’s famed mechanical inventions of draft rigging for railcars or the tandem rigging draft patented in 1891 and by 1910 used in more than 15000 railcars. He had begun developing Heart’s Delight by 1903 and by 1915 the farm encompassed 12000 acres producing beef and dairy cattle mules draft horses purebred horses sheep pigs chickens turkeys and brook trout. These two original images capture the prosperous dairy farming operation of Jacob Hammer 1858-1951 who along with his wife Barbara and eight children ages 7 to 23 were renting a substantial farm and just 5 years later purchased a much larger spread on Deer Island in Columbia County Oregon. The photographs appear to have been shot by John & Sarah Lovewell who worked as a husband & wife traveling photographers from about 1910-1915 along the Columbia & Willamette Rivers. This was a standard tread tractor fitted with fixed wheel widths and by 1939 received the updated styling changes with updated hoods and grilles of Henry Dreyfuss former Bel Geddes apprentice. This catalogue offers a wide range of seeds from Abobra to Zinnia’s and the company pioneered selling seeds in small packages labeled and illustrated and maintained 160000 outlets by 1890. Oliver Farm Equipment Co. was organized in Chicago in 1929 by the merger of Hart-Parr Tractor Co. of Charles City IA Nichols & Shepard Co. of Battle Creek MI the American Seeding Machine Co. of Richmond IN and Oliver Chilled Plow Works of South Bend IN. This merger revived the fortunes of all four manufacturers and allowed for them to compete with Case International Harvester John Deere Ford and other farm equipment and heavy equipment manufacturers at the time. This catalogue features sections on the latest in Oliver Hart-Parr tractors Row Crop equipment Nichols & Shepard combines threshers horse plows harrows tillage tools and Oliver planters. Of particular interest are the illustrations charts diagrams and listings for all standard and special equipment manufactured and sold by Oliver at the end of the Roaring 20’s. Oliver continued to expand through and after the Great Depression buying McKenzie Ann Arbor Agricultural the Cleveland Tractor Co. Cletrac which were producers of crawler-type caterpillar tractors and was finally purchased by White Motor Corp. in 1960.
