With 11 single page engraved plates all on stubs and 8 folding engraved plates the title page printed in red and black and slightly loose at the lower gutter edge a little age-toned and marked pp 38 512 24 slight age-toning and marking but overall very clean and tight contemporary half-leather and paper-covered boards rather worn and a little battered worming has led to slight loss at the spine head the author's name written on the spine in a contemporary hand. Our copy has a double-sided sheet tipped-in at the front endpaper - possibly the author's brief explanation of the aims of his work I can not see this mentioned in any other copy. A highly important work in the history of grass taxonomy and with an impeccable provenance - from the library of C.E. Hubbard with his signature and stamp on the front endpaper; Hubbard was the foremost grass taxonomist of the twentieth century. . First Edition. Half-Leather. Good. Illustrated with three folding engraved maps and ten engraved plates some folding octavo pp xvi 118; 128; 132; 95; 13 a few folded corners a little used and age-toned internally with a few paper imperfections and marks the front endpaper slightly marked and lacking a corner contemporary calf sound but rather worn at the edges lacking tiny pieces at the head and tail of the spine the spine dull and lacking its label the joints cracking and peeling. Of great value for the extensive notes on agriculture botany medicine and herbalism. Martyn 1699-1768 was born in London the son of a merchant. He attended a school in the vicinity of his home and when he turned 16 worked for his father intending to follow a business career. He married Marie Anne Fonnereau daughter of Claude Fonnereau a Huguenot refugee who had settled in England and became a successful merchant. He abandoned this idea in favour of medical and botanical studies. His interest in botany came from his acquaintance with an apothecary John Wilmer and Dr. Patrick Blair a surgeon-apothecary from Dundee who practiced in London. Martyn gave some botanical lectures in London in 1721 and 1726 and in 1727 was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. Martyn was one of the founders with Johann Jacob Dillenius and others and the secretary of a botanical society which met for a few years in the Rainbow coffee-house Watling Street. In 1732 he was appointed Professor of Botany at Cambridge University but finding little encouragement and hampered by a lack of equipment he soon ceased lecturing. He retained his professorship however until 1768 when he resigned in favour of his son Thomas. On resigning the botanical chair at Cambridge he presented the university with a number of his botanical specimens and books. Full Leather. Good. John Exshaw Hardcover

Pierre Joseph Macquer Paris 1718-1784. The original French edition was entitled 'Elemens de Chymie' and published in 1766. The French edition was 8vo and the two volumes has over 1300 pages. Important work known as the first modern book on chemistry. The English translation of Macquer's dictionary London 1771 by the Scot James Keir was five years after the French and he added material Black MacBride and Cavendish. A scarce item. 260x205mm.
