Prior to Henry Ward Beecher becoming a prominent preacher and abolitionist in New England he was active in a number of activities in Indianapolis. Beecher was appointed pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Lawrenceburg Indiana in 1837. In 1839 he became the Pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis. <br /> <br /> From the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis:<br /> <br /> Beecher’s activities were not narrowly confined to the ministries of Second Presbyterian. He was Stated Clerk of the Indianapolis Presbytery served on the executive committee of the INDIANA HISTORICAL SOCIETY was a member of the INDIANAPOLIS BENEVOLENT SOCIETY and promoted the movements for temperance and common schools.<br /> On a statewide level he led revivals in several cities served as a trustee of Wabash College and was editor from 1845-1847 of the INDIANA FARMER AND GARDENER renamed the Western Farmer And Gardener after a merger in 1846. On October 3 1847 Beecher left Indianapolis to become pastor of Plymouth Congregational Church in Brooklyn New York where he would become one of the most famous orators and influential figures of 19th– century America. Founded in 1792 by Samuel Adams John Hancock John Adams Robert Treat Paine and others the Massachusetts Society for Promoting Agriculture is one of the earliest such agricultural societies in the United States. The Society offered annual prizes for work experiments and inventions relating to agricultural improvement including the cultivation of wheat and other grains; the improvement of land including the reclamation of salt marshes; the raising of trees; the greatest stock maintained on the least land; the best vegetable food for wintering stock; the most and best wool from a given number of sheep; the best process for making cider maple sugar butter cheese flax and salted provisions; and for the best farm journals manures tree plantations advances in ploughs and ploughing techniques; etc. Many of the Society's earliest prizes are detailed within these volumes.<br /> <br /> Vol. 1 Laws and Regulations of the Massachusetts Society for Promoting Agriculture.
