This is an important snapshot in time of how a part of the Department of Energy communicated its capabilities to support a range of responses to the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent Global War on Terrorism. The Savannah River Site SRS is a nuclear reservation in the United States in the state of South Carolina located on land in Aiken Allendale and Barnwell counties adjacent to the Savannah River 25 miles 40 km southeast of Augusta Georgia. The site was built during the 1950s to refine nuclear materials for deployment in nuclear weapons. The Savannah River National Laboratory SRNL is a multi-program national laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy's DOE Office of Environmental Management. SRNL is located at the Savannah River Site SRS near Jackson South Carolina. It was founded in 1951 as the Savannah River Laboratory. It was certified as a national laboratory on May 7 2004. SRNL research topics include environmental remediation technologies for the hydrogen economy handling of hazardous materials and technologies for prevention of nuclear proliferation. It has specific experience in vitrification of nuclear waste and hydrogen storage initially developed to support production of tritium and plutonium at the Savannah River Site during the Cold War.
