First edition of this photobook documenting the beginnings of one of modern China's great hydrological engineering projects which was launched after the Huai burst its banks in summer 1950 and floods caused devastating damage. The national-level campaign to "Harness the Huai River" focused on damming "the upper reaches of the river in order to develop hydro power and control floods by both storing flood water in upstream reservoirs and in low-lying flood diversion areas and by dredging the Hong and Ru rivers the chief local tributaries on the upper reaches of the Huai" Yi p. 28. The campaign lasted almost three decades. In the first year authorities constructed 2100 kilometres of embankments dredged 864 kilometres of channel and built 62 reservoirs. Quarto.
