Presents the scientific results of an expedition promoted by the British Ornithologists' Union to study the endangered birds of the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean. This group of islands is of unique importance to bird conservation and is perhaps best known as the last home of the famous dodo. Thirty endemic species of birds are already extinct and the populations of several others are now so small as to be of doubtful validity. The data presented here will enable the appropriate government departments and conservation bodies to proceed on the basis of a sound knowledge of the needs of the threatened birds and it is hoped that the survival of at least a proportion of the unique wildlife of this island group can be ensured. Studies of Mascarene Island Birds will also provide the keen amateur ornithologist with a serious interest in conservation with a direct appreciation of field work aimed at protecting rate species in their natural habitat. Accompanying is a letter from the manager of the trade department of MacMillan to a bookshop in Dallas Texas. The top of the letter the fep & the inside front cover are rust stained from an old staple since removed. The book contains 16 plates on 8 pages with the balance blank paper. The dummy was intended to help obtain advance orders of the book. The letter is dated 10 Aug '37 3 months before publication date. There is very slight soiling to the top of the front cover and a 1 1/2x3" area of silverfish damage to the top outer corner of the back cover. Otherwise the book is extremely tight. Bound in brown cloth with a illustration to front board title lettering in black to the spine very good. Contents clean and tight bookplate belonging to Eric Hosking to the front pastedown no inscriptions. A very good copy. Copy from the library of Eric Hosking.Eric Hosking OBE Hon FRPS FBIPP 1909-1991 was widely acknowledged as one of the world's most eminent natural history photographers "Perhaps the most famous bird photographer ever to have lived" Gemma Padley. He was pioneering and developed new techniques especially the use of flash photography and automatic shutter release technology which enabled him to photograph birds at night and freeze birds in flight for the first time. Famously when just 28 he lost an eye to a tawny owl while climbing up to a hide in rural Wales the event which inspired the ingeneous title of his autobiography "An Eye for a Bird" 1970. Over his exceptionally long career he photographed over 1800 species and his pictures have appeared in some 1000 books including the popular New Naturalist series of which he was photographic editor. Hosking was not only a photographer of birds but also a highly knowledgeable ornithologist. Cambridge at the University Press Hardcover
