First published in 1796 Irish author Roche's gothic romance was incredibly popular in the Nineteenth Century and went to many editions by various publishers. This is a Very Good Plus copy of the First Thus Edition by Routledge reasonably scarce and with no institutional holdings. 585 pages still bright and supple some foxing throughout. In an attractive Victorian decorative binding: red cloth with embossed designs in black and gilt. Contemporary ownership signature on FFEP and a Christmas gift sticker on the front paste-down. No publication date but the contemporary inscription indicates 1882 earlier than presumed by other booksellers. No dustjacket; in an archival plastic protector. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. O'Reilly 1844-1890 was an early member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and was sentenced to penal servitude in Australia; he escaped and became a prominent voice in the Irish nationalist diaspora. This is a Very Good Plus copy of the First Edition a posthumous biography issued in the year following Boyle's death. Large octavo in a maroon pebbled cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine and front cover. Clean text; 790 pages indexed. Bumped corners and a bit of rub to the foot of the spine. The covers are bright and this would be quite a nice copy if the gutters had not split causing the cloth on the spine to be barely hanging on.
