1853120122London: Rock Brothers & Payne. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 1853. Unknown - Early UK Edition. Paper Covers. Two separate volumes. During the 1850s Rock and Co published a series of 16 prints of Welsh costumes 8 of which had bilingual titles. Most of the women in these are shown wearing very tall Welsh hats. The women represented were probably mostly from farmers families and most of the events depicted are special occasions. They were published in small oblong volumes showing just 6 in each volume. The fact that some of these were bilingual suggests that they were not just for the English visitors market. They often represent regional variations of Welsh costume but some of the backgrounds include recognisable buildings. Many of the prints are signed with the monogram TO and this was the artist and publisher Thomas Onwhyn 1811-1886. As this is published by Rock Bros. & Payne rather than just Rock & Co with the title 'Sketches of Welsh Costume' rather than '6 Plates of .' or just 'Welsh costumes' suggests that this is a New and Re-organised Edition when the firm was joined by Payne a litle later with a varied selection from the original 16 prints. Both volumes in cream printed paper wrappers printed in black with an embossed cream 'doily' design around the Titling on the front cover. Numbers I and 2 respectively printed on the top right corner. Books not dated per se but 1853 dated on each vignette. Internally Fine 1 vignette only had a very light patch of foxing on a blank corner. All the rest look 'as new'! 6 superb B&W steel-engraved vignette illustrations with a slight variation in size in each booklet. Most engravings captioned in both English and Welsh but a few in English only. Volume 1 depicts = 'A Bidding in Wales' ; 'A Wedding in Wales' ; 'Returning from the Wedding' ; Welsh Fishwives Llangwm Pembrokeshire' ; 'Return From Market Gower Glamorgan' ; and 'Welsh Chapels'. Volume 2 = 'Welsh Peasantry' ; 'Market Day Wales' ; 'Hiring Fair' ; ' Mode of Carrying Infants' ; ' Fishermen with Coracles' ; and 'Dressing the Grave with flowers' . No other text as issued. Myths are history not yet developed First edition of this ambitious work of comparative religion delineating the continuities between world cultures throughout human history. Among the civilizations and religions it covers are the Babylonians Zoroastrians Ancient Greeks and Romans Hindus Buddhists and cultures from across Scandinavia Polynesia and Africa. The publication was issued to subscribers only. An engineer by training Forlong's 1824-1904 interest in world religions stemmed from his time in Asia serving as a Major General in the Indian Army. He categorized all religions into six types of worship: tree phallic serpent fire sun and ancestor. These types formed "streams" flowing throughout human culture with their progression and interactions here visualized in the large accompanying chart. Forlong's interpretations and his abandonment of Christianity were scandalous to many particularly his emphasis on the sexual nature of religious symbolism but his work was influential among such as Helena Blavatsky and Aleister Crowley who described it as "an invaluable textbook of old systems of initiation" Crowley p. 211. 2 quarto text vols 278 x 221 mm and linen-backed chromolithographic folding chart 236 x 65 mm; "A Student's Synchronological Chart of the Religions of the World". With 14 engraved plates 2 colour maps double-page and folding respectively 4 folding tables illustrations within text. Recent green half morocco spine lettered in gilt raised bands top edges gilt others uncut original cloth front covers bound at rear of each volume. Chart with original green cloth slipcase housed within custom green half morocco box. Pencil ownership signatures of Paul Backer perhaps the professor of dramatic arts 1957-2016 on title page of first volume and map verso of second; sporadic pencil annotations. Contents lightly browned occasional chips to margins closed tear to folding map. Chart verso a little soiled else colours bright; slipcase cockled and worn with a little loss. VIII 53 1 blank pp. Rare second edition of a pamphlet by the Brazilian lawyer and politician José Joaquim Landulfo da Rocha Medrado 1831-1860 published under his initials L. M. = Landulfo Medrado. According to the authors preface the first edition was not distributed to the public. In 1882 a third edition was published Bahia Imprensa Economica and in 1923 a fourth edition appeared Bahia Imprensa Oficial do Estado.In this pamphlet titled The courtiers and the Emperor's journey. Political essay on the situation Medrado offered a pointed critique of the Brazilian monarchy's tendency to adopt European courtly customs. He argued that these customs were ill-suited to Brazil's unique position as an American nation. Medrado believed that Brazil required a more democratic and parliamentary form of governance one that moved away from the concentration of power in the hands of the Emperor. Instead he advocated for a system where elected representatives would have a more prominent role in shaping the nation's future.This pamphlet reflects the broader political tensions of the time with liberals like Medrado pushing for reforms that would align Brazil's governance with its distinct identity rather than imitating European aristocratic traditions. In 1860 the Brazilian magazine Monarchia - Democracia issued a critique of the pamphlet arguing that the pamphlet's anonymous author avoids responsibility for promoting dangerous ideas that could destabilize Brazil. It defends the nation's democratic and monarchical institutions warning that the pamphlet's divisive ideas threaten Brazil's unity and future.With the large book plate of the Brazilian journalist Elysio de Carvalho 1880-1925 mounted on the front pastedown with a blue stamp in the bottom margin of the book plate "Y 4 120". Spine rubbed and slightly scratched the corners and edges of the boards show slight signs of wear the upper outer corner of the half title-page torn off and restored with paper slightly browned throughout with occasional foxing mainly in the first and last few leaves. Otherwise in good condition. hardcover

La mayor parte de libro de Diego AndrÃ©s Rocha estÃ¡ dedicado a presentar y defender dos tesis muy diferentes entre sÃ: la de que los indÃgenas americanos descendÃan de los espaÃ±oles y la que seÃ±ala a las diez tribus perdidas de Israel como las que dieron origen a la poblaciÃ³n del Nuevo mundo.
