1890502San Francsico California: Pacific Rolling Mill Company 1890. 8vo. 250 x 170 mm. 10 x 7 inches. 100 pp. plus 4 leaves of ruled paper 2 with measurements in manuscript. Illustrated throughout with simple drawings of parts many stenciled with green wash; one plate folding. Bound in limp cloth covered boards title in gilt on front cover; a cloth binding shows some wear to gilt title two pencil drawings on front endpaper; other a very good sound copy. Straight forward price list of iron bar steel rail rolled and forged metal axles nuts bolts washers and dozens of other metal products. There is no introduction about the history of the firm just images of parts prices and a few lines of text describing specifications for some of the more complicated manufacture items. What distinguishes this rare trade catalogue is the design sense of many of the images and the application of stenciled color to highlight the object. The printed form of the parts are in outline and as one pages through the catalogue the images take on an abstract quality. Metal parts become contoured shapes with form being determined only by the light green wash applied to the physical part of the design. Although unintentional I am sure this late 19th century publication replete with many of the characteristics of period book design exhibits a very modernist feel one that is most unusual in publications of this nature. Although called the 7th edition this is only one of three issues of the PRMC's product guide and price list that is known. Organized in 1867 PRMC grew continuously and by 1892 was producing more than 40 thousand tons of iron and steel. "This giant enterprise is so closely identified with the manufacturing interests of the Pacific Coast that there is scarcely a manufacturing firm or corporation on the Coast that does not depend upon its output. The mills are located at Potrero Point in South San Francisco and cover an immense area" Master Hands. Romaine Guide to American Trade Catalogues p. 200 this edition and one from 1886 both known in only one copy each at California Historical Society. 1841754Pittsburgh 1841. About very good. 48pp. Large folio. Contemporary half reverse-calf and blue paper boards. Wear to corners and spine ends boards soiled. Leaves reinforced at gutter margin with tape some light soiling. In a clear and legible hand. This ledger records the register and pay information for approximately thirty-five men who worked at the Birmingham Iron Works from 1836 to 1841. The "Register of Hands That Work by the Ton" records each man's name his wage days worked how much tonnage and his job description. The Iron Works supported an engineer a blacksmith a watchman refiners heaters carters rollers puddlers bricklayers and some men simply described as laborers. The number of employees varies from year to year ranging from thirty to forty-five or so with many men listed as steady employees year after year. Also tucked in the front of the volume is a slim gathering of sheets labeled in manuscript as "Balance of Property Debts Goods & Chattels of the firm of Hoge & Hartman Iron Manufacturers Pittsburgh Jany. 2nd 1840." This lists receivables and debts for that company which was one of several iron works in the area by 1840. Located south of the Allegheny near 16th Street the Birmingham Iron Works was founded in 1836. It had twenty single puddling furnaces five heating furnaces and produced bar iron rounds hoops bands and other forms of iron. There works were active from 1836 to 1871 and averaged 9000 tons of production per year. This ledger therefore encompasses the first years of its operation and is an early record not only for the company but for the region in terms of iron production which would eventually lead to the steel boom that made Pittsburgh prosperous -- and Andrew Carnegie insanely wealthy. An excellent source for the labor history of the steel industry in Pittsburgh. unknown books

From the library of British-born South African financier mining magnate and politician Sir Lionel Phillips with his bookplates to the pastedowns. Lionel and Florence Phillips left South Africa a major legacy through their art collections. Florence campaigned for the founding of the Johannesburg Art Gallery and arranged its first collections including her lace collection while Lionel donated seven oils and a Rodin sculpture. Rare and with desirable provenance. The Story of an African Farm published in 1883 under the pseudonym Ralph Iron was South African author Olive Schreiner's first published novel. It was an immediate success and has become recognized as one of the first feminist novels. In writing the first great South African novel Schreiner drew on childhood memories of life on the isolated African veld to fashion a powerful indictment of the rigid Boer and English social conventions of her day. It was greeted by both praise and condemnation for its feminist views on women's status and on marriage and for its unorthodox critique of dishonesty and hypocrisy in the doctrines and practices of "respectable" Christian church people. 1883140940359London: Chapman and Hall 1883. First Edition. Near Fine. First edition first printing of what is widely recognized as one of the first feminist novels. Near Fine with light rubbing to binding pages toned and with occasional instances of light spotting. Finely bound in full black ostrich skin by Sangorski and Sutcliffe mirroring the book's setting on an ostrich farm. At the time of publication the South African ostrich farming industry was rapidly developing to meet a craze for the high demand of ostrich feathers with their weight-price approaching that of gold's. The industry's rise brought about much cruelty and suffering for ostriches and the novel highlights the crossover among the contemporary leading activists of women's rights movement and the champions of animal rights. Published under a male pseudonym of Ralph Iron this was Scheiner's first novel and was met with immediate success. A complex narrative woven around themes of cruelty and restriction set against a colonial backdrop. It's notable for the main female character's handling of themes of love marriage and motherhood while subverting the traditional gender roles female sexuality and intellectual power.
