A handwritten manuscript 'Journal of Bores Put Down in the Dalmellington Mineral Field' by the Dalmellington Iron Company between 1849 to 1851.The Dalmellington Ironworks were opened by The Dalmellington Iron Company in 1848 in the small Sottish market town of Dalmellington. Good quality coal was produced from surface workings and sent down the turnpike road to Galloway with the town growing after the completion of a local railway in 1858.This manuscript discusses the depth of boreholes made in the mid-glen Craigmark; Burnfoot Hill; Burnhead Glen and Lillyhole between 1849 and 1851 with note made of the depths and locations at which coal and ironstone were found.A wonderful insight into mines in mid-nineteenth century Scotland. In paper wraps with handwritten title to front wrap. Chipping small losses and discolouration to wrap perimeters. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright. Very Good None paperback
18693723Galveston Tx 1869. Very good. 2pp. on a single folded folio sheet of lined paper with integral blank plus fourteen partially-printed receipts completed in manuscript. Minor dust-soiling creasing and edge wear. A post-Civil War manuscript agreement from Texas with the signatures of twenty-six investors transferring their stock in the Brazos Iron Bridge Company to John Sealy of the Galveston Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway Company. Additionally the document is noted and signed on the verso by Sealy transferring those same shares to Thomas W. Peirce. The document is accompanied by fourteen receipts for installment payments on capital stock purchased in the Brazos Iron Bridge Company some of which relates directly to the larger transfer agreement. The Brazos Iron Bridge Company was organized in 1867. Its mission was to construct a railway bridge across the Brazos River. The bridge completed in July 1869 was purchased by the Buffalo Bayou Brazos and Colorado Railway later known as the Galveston Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway Company. When the dust settled on the various transactions among the shareholders John Sealy owned a one-eighth interest in the railway company. Sealy moved from Pennsylvania to Galveston in 1846 and became an important early Galveston merchant real estate investor and railroad magnate. unknown

A very scarce memorandum for the Wheelock Iron and Salt Company based in Cheshire with numerous clauses showing how the business is structured. Memorandum and Articles of Association of the Wheelock Iron and Salt Company Limited a very scarce pamphlet confirming legalities of the Salt and Mining company based at Wheelock near Sandbach Cheshire. In the publisher's original paper wraps. On the rear wrap are the previous owner's notes dated from 1891 concerning a court case. Little is known about the company execpt that due to the dangerous nature of mining a number of accidents were recorded but the company was likely to employ many local Cestrians. The company terminated in 1926 due to competition with American tarrifs. Despite being specific to Wheelock this is a valuable source for those wishing to learn more about the structures and legalities surrounding individual companies during the Victorian era. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally slight dulling with the odd faint mark and a crease through the center of the front wrap. Previous owner's ink inscription to rear wrap and to top edge of front wrap. Pastedowns are bright and clean with minor age toning and a couple of small marks. 1890502San Francsico California: Pacific Rolling Mill Company 1890. 8vo. 250 x 170 mm. 10 x 7 inches. 100 pp. plus 4 leaves of ruled paper 2 with measurements in manuscript. Illustrated throughout with simple drawings of parts many stenciled with green wash; one plate folding. Bound in limp cloth covered boards title in gilt on front cover; a cloth binding shows some wear to gilt title two pencil drawings on front endpaper; other a very good sound copy. Straight forward price list of iron bar steel rail rolled and forged metal axles nuts bolts washers and dozens of other metal products. There is no introduction about the history of the firm just images of parts prices and a few lines of text describing specifications for some of the more complicated manufacture items. What distinguishes this rare trade catalogue is the design sense of many of the images and the application of stenciled color to highlight the object. The printed form of the parts are in outline and as one pages through the catalogue the images take on an abstract quality. Metal parts become contoured shapes with form being determined only by the light green wash applied to the physical part of the design. Although unintentional I am sure this late 19th century publication replete with many of the characteristics of period book design exhibits a very modernist feel one that is most unusual in publications of this nature. Although called the 7th edition this is only one of three issues of the PRMC's product guide and price list that is known. Organized in 1867 PRMC grew continuously and by 1892 was producing more than 40 thousand tons of iron and steel. "This giant enterprise is so closely identified with the manufacturing interests of the Pacific Coast that there is scarcely a manufacturing firm or corporation on the Coast that does not depend upon its output. The mills are located at Potrero Point in South San Francisco and cover an immense area" Master Hands. Romaine Guide to American Trade Catalogues p. 200 this edition and one from 1886 both known in only one copy each at California Historical Society. OCLC cites an edition from 1885 in one copy at San Francisco Public Library and this edition 1890 also in only one copy at California H. S. The Amalgamated Association of Iron & Steel and Tin Workers was first organized in 1876 and instigated key strikes in the 1880s for better wages and working conditions. In 1887 AA joined with the American Federation of Labor AFL which led to increased power and membership. At its height AA had over 24000 members. AA organized the 1892 Homestead Strike and the length bitterness and violence of that strike nearly bankrupted AA and resulted in a massive loss of its membership. This business card was probably engraved and printed within the several years preceding that move. The Phenix Iron Company was established in 1830 and incorporated as a stock company in 1832. It partnered with the Steel Workers Organizing Committee of the CIO in November 1935. Both organizations disbanded May 22 1942 to form a new organization the United Steelworkers. They suffered significant setbacks from the results of the Homestead Strike and their other labor organizing efforts and strikes in early 20th century Pittsburgh and became linked with the AFL which gave them greater traction that increased with the merger of the AFL and CIO. A foundational document in American labor history: one can see the direct influence of fraternal organizations and masonic societies on the rituals of membership in the earliest days of this labor union. Etowah was located just north of Cartersville Georgia in former Cass County. The Iron Works were destroyed by the Union Army in 1864 and after the War the area remained in ruins. <br /> <br /> From from the Dictionary of North Carolina Biography 6 volumes edited by William S. Powell:<br /> <br /> "Moses Stroup the eldest son of Jacob was born in Lincoln County N.C. With little formal schooling he was brought up in the iron business. Many contemporaries considered him to be one of the "most expert furnacemen" in the South and a "remarkable genius" in the iron business as well as a good money-maker but a "poor keeper." He accompanied his father to South Carolina about 1815 and when Jacob moved to Georgia in the late 1820s Moses stayed behind. But in 1843 he joined his father at Cass County Ga. and bought him out. Moses built a rolling mill and rolled some of the first railroad iron made in Georgia some of which was used on the state-owned Western and Atlantic. In 1847 he sold the Cass County works to Mark Anthony Cooper and Company and shortly moved to Alabama where he bought ore lands from the government and began the Round Mountain Furnace in 1849". <br /> <br /> From wikipedia:<br /> <br /> Bartow County was created from the Cherokee lands of the Cherokee County territory on December 3 1832 and named Cass County after General Lewis Cass 1782–1866 Secretary of War under President Andrew Jackson Minister to France and Secretary of State under President James Buchanan3 who was instrumental in the removal of Native Americans from the area. However the county was renamed on December 6 1861 in honor of Francis S. Bartow because of Cass's support of the Union4 even though Bartow never visited in the county living 200 miles 320 km away near Savannah all of his life. Cass had supported the doctrine of popular sovereignty the right of each state to determine its own laws independently of the Federal government the platform of conservative Southerners who removed his name. There were at least three distinctly different works with this title issued by the corporate author: 1890 72 pages with the Lalance and Grosjean Manufacturing Co name; 1891 32 pages an almanac not a trade catalogue; and this one undated ~136 pages a trade catalogue. Promotional combined trade catalogue and cookbook for Agate Iron Ware Manufacturing Company manufacturers of kitchen ware. Illustrated descriptions of the wares typically two to a page face recipes. The recipes are decidedly Anglo-French not American and they lean towards more elegant fare. Illustrations include the Agate Iron Ware manufacturing plant on front wrapper verso an assortment of medals and awards and an image of a homemaker sitting in her kitchen surrounded by Agate Ware while consulting this cookbook. The front panel bears the printed promotional statement "Compliments of F. A. Walker & Co. Cornhill". In original chromolithograph wrappers decorated in a Japonisme-style. Small stain along bottom edge of text block bit of bumping to the corners. Wrappers worn at corners and with some wear to the bottom of the spine panel. Overall near very good.
