Ferro Pascal Joseph Ferro ab 1805 Pasqual Joseph Ritter von Ferro 5. Juni 1753 in Bonn - 21. August 1809 in Wien war ein deutscher Arzt Sanitätsreferent der niederösterreichischen Landesverwaltung und Hochschullehrer in Wien der das moderne Sanitäts- und Rettungsdienstwesen sowie die Kuhpockenimpfung in Österreich eingeführt hat. Pascal Joseph wurde 1753 in Bonn als Sohn des Offiziers Johann Lazarus Ferro aus Treviso und der Anna Catharina Komerscheid geboren. Mit 14 Jahren begann er zunächst eine Ausbildung als Wundarzt damals ein Handwerksberuf und ging dann zum Militär. Von 1771 bis 1775 war er Feldscher eines pfälzischen Kavallerieregiments. Ferro wollte jedoch Arzt werden und studierte Medizin in Heidelberg Straßburg und Wien. Er blieb in Wien und war zunächst Assistenzarzt am Parzmayerschen Spital ehe er 1785 in den sanitären Verwaltungsdienst eintrat mit dem Titel Sanitätsmagister von Wien. Im Jahr 1793 wurde er zum Sanitätsreferent der niederösterreichischen Landesregierung im Rang eines Regierungsrates ernannt. In dieser Position sorgte er für die Einrichtung eines Rettungswesens und regelte das Bestattungswesen. 1780 begann Ferro als Mediziner mit Kaltwasserbehandlungen Hydrotherapie und Sauerstofftherapie zudem konstruierte er ein Badefloß als schwimmende Badeanstalt auf der Donau. -cf. wiki unknown

A large unique book ca. 1900 14 x 8.5 inches vertically oriented; softcover about 100 pages of typescript in purple carbon very seldom with ink corrections culled from “The Republic†— probably the Baraboo Republic a newspaper of the period published in Baraboo the county seat of Sauk County Wisconsin this book with material relating to the Iron Brigade the 6th Wisconsin Regiment of volunteers who fought for the Union in the Civil War and also concerning the Sauk County Riflemen. It apparently was compiled by a veteran-turned-historian who concludes this compilation writing “Returned to private life -- became the 'man behind the hoe' instead of 'behind the gun.’†Very rare and a great resource for anyone interested in this period of Wisconsin history. np unknown

From the library of British-born South African financier mining magnate and politician Sir Lionel Phillips with his bookplates to the pastedowns. Lionel and Florence Phillips left South Africa a major legacy through their art collections. Florence campaigned for the founding of the Johannesburg Art Gallery and arranged its first collections including her lace collection while Lionel donated seven oils and a Rodin sculpture. Rare and with desirable provenance. The Story of an African Farm published in 1883 under the pseudonym Ralph Iron was South African author Olive Schreiner's first published novel. It was an immediate success and has become recognized as one of the first feminist novels. She is best remembered today for her novel The Story of an African Farm 1883 which has been highly acclaimed as one of the first feminist novels. It tells the story of a girl on an isolated farm on the veld who struggles for her independence in the face of rigid Boer social conventions. in doing so it deals boldly with such contemporary issues as agnosticism existential independence individualism the professional aspirations of women and the elemental nature of life on the colonial frontier. Since the late 20th century scholars have also credited Schreiner as an advocate for the Afrikaners and other South African groups who were excluded from political power for decades such as indigenous Blacks Jews and Indians. Although she showed interest in socialism pacifism vegetarianism and feminism amongst other topics her views escaped restrictive categorisations. Her published works and other surviving writings promote implicit values such as moderation friendship and understanding amongst all peoples and avoid the pitfalls of political radicalism which she consciously eschewed. Called a lifelong freethinker she also continued to adhere to the spirit of the Christian Bible and developed a secular version of the worldview of her missionary parents with mystical elements. There were at least three distinctly different works with this title issued by the corporate author: 1890 72 pages with the Lalance and Grosjean Manufacturing Co name; 1891 32 pages an almanac not a trade catalogue; and this one undated ~136 pages a trade catalogue. Promotional combined trade catalogue and cookbook for Agate Iron Ware Manufacturing Company manufacturers of kitchen ware. Illustrated descriptions of the wares typically two to a page face recipes. The recipes are decidedly Anglo-French not American and they lean towards more elegant fare. Illustrations include the Agate Iron Ware manufacturing plant on front wrapper verso an assortment of medals and awards and an image of a homemaker sitting in her kitchen surrounded by Agate Ware while consulting this cookbook. The front panel bears the printed promotional statement "Compliments of F. A. Walker & Co. Cornhill". In original chromolithograph wrappers decorated in a Japonisme-style. Small stain along bottom edge of text block bit of bumping to the corners. Wrappers worn at corners and with some wear to the bottom of the spine panel. Overall near very good. Etowah was located just north of Cartersville Georgia in former Cass County. The Iron Works were destroyed by the Union Army in 1864 and after the War the area remained in ruins. <br /> <br /> From from the Dictionary of North Carolina Biography 6 volumes edited by William S. Powell:<br /> <br /> "Moses Stroup the eldest son of Jacob was born in Lincoln County N.C. With little formal schooling he was brought up in the iron business. Many contemporaries considered him to be one of the "most expert furnacemen" in the South and a "remarkable genius" in the iron business as well as a good money-maker but a "poor keeper." He accompanied his father to South Carolina about 1815 and when Jacob moved to Georgia in the late 1820s Moses stayed behind. But in 1843 he joined his father at Cass County Ga. and bought him out. Moses built a rolling mill and rolled some of the first railroad iron made in Georgia some of which was used on the state-owned Western and Atlantic. In 1847 he sold the Cass County works to Mark Anthony Cooper and Company and shortly moved to Alabama where he bought ore lands from the government and began the Round Mountain Furnace in 1849". <br /> <br /> From wikipedia:<br /> <br /> Bartow County was created from the Cherokee lands of the Cherokee County territory on December 3 1832 and named Cass County after General Lewis Cass 1782–1866 Secretary of War under President Andrew Jackson Minister to France and Secretary of State under President James Buchanan3 who was instrumental in the removal of Native Americans from the area. However the county was renamed on December 6 1861 in honor of Francis S. Bartow because of Cass's support of the Union4 even though Bartow never visited in the county living 200 miles 320 km away near Savannah all of his life. Cass had supported the doctrine of popular sovereignty the right of each state to determine its own laws independently of the Federal government the platform of conservative Southerners who removed his name. It partnered with the Steel Workers Organizing Committee of the CIO in November 1935. Both organizations disbanded May 22 1942 to form a new organization the United Steelworkers. They suffered significant setbacks from the results of the Homestead Strike and their other labor organizing efforts and strikes in early 20th century Pittsburgh and became linked with the AFL which gave them greater traction that increased with the merger of the AFL and CIO. A foundational document in American labor history: one can see the direct influence of fraternal organizations and masonic societies on the rituals of membership in the earliest days of this labor union.
