A letter by Member of Parliament for Westminster Charles James Fox 1749-1806 to his constituents addressing the motives behind his recent motions in Commons particularly his efforts in averting conflict with France. 17935139London: J. Debrett 1793. Second edition. A nice copy of this open letter to his constituents from the political radical Charles James Fox. It argued his radical position and opposition to war with France. Significant here as France declared war on the United Kingdom six days later. Although this copy seems to lack the half title and a blank as it begins with the title page and the next leaf has the signature B our copy follows the pagination of OCLC 6595972. So we assume that the second edition had no half title. Contents themselves are complete. To the end is a single leaf of advertisements from Debretts end with a hanging "the" indicating there should be a second leaf here lacking. Sewn with twine as with all other copies we have seen. The covers have a little marking and edgewear but inside the contents are clean and tidy throughout. ii 43 1. pages. Charles James Fox a radical Whig reformer was first elected for a rotten borough in 1768 whilst he was still underage. He first represented the significant borough of Westminster in 1780 and remained their member of parliament until his death in 1806. 20cm x 11.5cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 6595972. . J. John Horne Tooke June 25 1736 March 18 1812 was an English politician and philologist. Born John Horne he adopted the name Tooke in 1782 after being designated heir to the estate of a rich friend William Tooke. He became 1760 an Anglican priest but soon abandoned his clerical duties for politics. He was a strong supporter of John Wilkes until 1771 when he broke with him and founded the Constitutional Society to promote parliamentary reform and support for the American colonists. He was fined and imprisoned 1778 for attempting to raise funds to aid the victims of the government "murder" at Lexington and Concord. In 1794 in a period of repression of radical agitation Tooke was tried for treason but acquitted. In 1801 he was elected to Parliament but in the same year the government passed an act specifically directed against him that disqualified clergy from sitting in the House of Commons. Tooke's later years were devoted to literary pursuits. His Epea Pteroenta or the Diversions of Purley 1786-1805 was an early attempt at scientific language study. . First Edition. Full Cloth. Engraved bookplate of: John Glaisyer Chymist & Druggist Brighton" Engraved armorial bookplate of Francis Frederick Fox. Contemporary full leather binding joints cracked. A nice copy of an important and scarce Quaker work. George Fox 1624-1691 was the founder of the Society of Friends Quakers. By nature serious and contemplative at the age of 19 he entered upon a wandering quest for spiritual enlightenment. In 1646 he underwent a mystical experience that convinced him that Christianity was not an outward profession but an inner light by which Christ directly illumines the believing soul. Revelation was for Fox not confined to the Scriptures. In 1647 he began to preach. Although often the victim of mob brutality and eight times imprisoned between 1649 and 1675 Fox won many followers especially among groups of separatists. In 1668 he prepared the first pattern of organization which was for some years to serve as the discipline of the Society of Friends. The London Yearly Meeting was started in 1671. To confirm his followers in their beliefs and to spread the truths Fox went in 1671 to the West Indies and to America where he made arduous journeys to various colonies scattered between New England and North Carolina. Later he twice visited Holland. His sincerity serenity fearlessness and powerful preaching are attested to by a number of his contemporaries. This Journal with a preface by William Penn was first published in 1694. An early owner of this book was Francis Frederick Fox 1832-1915 the 2nd son of Francis Ker Fox of Brislington House. He was an oil and colour merchant President of the Grateful Society in 1869. Sadly his wife Alice died in childbirth in 1870 and he was left a widower with six children. He was Master of the Society of Merchant Venturers in 1878 & 79 and Sheriff in 1894. He was a J.P. for Bristol and for Gloucestershire and an Alderman for the city from 1865. He wrote extensively on local history. Perhaps he was a descendant of the great Quaker George Fox. Smith p. 690; Sabin 25352. PRICE JUST REDUCED! PA62 Language: eng. 3rd Edition. Hardcover.
