While ideally it will complete a collection of the Crapelet-Deterville Buffon set it also stands as a wonderful single volume with 15-double paned illustrations of many four-legged animals. Georges-Louis Leclerc Count of Buffon 1707-1788 produced his encyclopedic work of 36 volumes over the course of 50 years and is known as one of the chief naturalists of the 18th century. Among other paradigm-changing contributions to understanding the natural world Buffon's works challenged calculation that the world was 6 000 years old and his claim of the superiority of European flora and fauna to that of North America affronted Thomas Jefferson so much that he sent examples to Europe in order to disprove Buffon's assertion. The treatise proper is followed by numerous tables of observations on the inclination of the magnetic needle with the names of travelers and navigators in the southern and northern hemispheres according to different latitudes. One of Buffon's most important contributions was the popularization of the old earth theory in opposition to Archbishop Ussher's biblical earth time-line. <br><br> Buffon was an important pre-cursor to Darwin. Cited as the father of biogeography Buffon's Law postulated that creatures "improved" and "degenerated" after dispersing from a center of creation. He based his theory on comparative anatomy studies. Buffon tried to explain the origin of living things by spontaneous generation of elementary particles and its development as a consequence of climate and diet. Notes: Edme-Louis Daubenton 12 August 1730 – 12 December 1785 was a French naturalist. Daubenton was the cousin of another French naturalist Louis Jean-Marie Daubenton. Georges-Louis Leclerc the Comte de Buffon engaged Edme-Louis Daubenton to supervise the coloured illustrations for the monumental Histoire Naturelle 1749–89. The Planches Enluminee started to appear in 1765 and finally accounted for 1008 plates all engraved by François-Nicolas Martinet 1731–1800 and all painted by hand. The Parisian publisher Panckoucke published a version without text between 1765 and 1783.<br>The Histoire Naturelle générale et particulière avec la description du Cabinet du Roi is an encyclopaedic collection of 36 large quarto volumes written between 1749 and 1789 by the Comte de Buffon. The books cover what was known of the "natural sciences" at the time including what would now be called material science physics chemistry and technology as well as the natural history of animals.<br>A de luxe edition of Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux 1771–1786 was produced by the Imprimerie royale in 10 folio and quarto volumes with 1008 engraved and hand-coloured plates executed under Buffon's personal supervision by Edme-Louis Daubenton cousin and brother-in-law of Buffon's principal collaborator Louis Jean-Marie Daubenton. The plates were originally issued in 42 cahiers each containing 24 plates and no accompanying text or titles.<br> Size: Folio 460 x 315mm Illustration: A beautifully bound collection of 100 handcoloured plates produced by Daubenton for the Comte de Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle which was issued in multiple parts between 1765 and 1783 and came to encompass over 1000 plates. Le incisioni in bn sono opera di Scattaglia mentre quelle colorate sono di Benard. Le tavole sono precedute solo dalla pagina di titolo Planches des quadrupedes. Première partie con bollo di proprietà vistoso e con ex libris Polesini al retro del piatto. Il volume di quadrupedi eseguito da Daubenton faceva parte della pubblicazione Tableau encyclopédique et méthodique des trois regnes de la nature pubblicato sia a Parigi da Pankoucke sia a Padova alla Stamperia del Seminario. Legatura coeva in mezza pelle del primo Ottocento con titolo dorato al dorso qualche spellatura e piatti con carta marmorizzata. Louis Daubenton 1716-1799 descrisse circa 200 specie di quadrupedi nei primi volumi dell'opera di Buffon con tale esattezza e precisione da servire da base allo sviluppo dell'anatomia comparata. Pietro Scattaglia 1739-1810 veneziano fu incisore ed editore di stampe nella sua Calcografia Magna. unknown

Scarce in this particular translation especially in this complete state. A very good early translation of this classic work in a lovely original binding. Some hinges needing attention but still great to see in this binding. Clean and bright internally. Natural History General and Particular discusses several differing species in the animal kingdom from Apes to the Hippopotamus. Volume IX is a corrections and additions volume providing lots of further information. There are 307 illustrated plates across all volumes conveying numerous animals such as dogs cats and elephants. Collated complete with all plates. Comte de Buffon was a French author and his natural history was originally published from 1749-1804. It spanned to an encyclopedic collection of 36 quartos. This English translation was published prior to the to completion of this work. The work ended up being limited to the animal and mineral kingdoms. This translation has numerous notes and observations by William Smellie a Scottish encyclopedist and naturalist. The Second Edition of this translation. In full tree calf bindings. Externally generally smart with patches of rubbing to the spines joints and extremities. Split to the front joint of volume I. Front hinge to volume I is tender with cords showing. Small loss to the head of spine to volume I. Rear joint to volume I is starting but firm with the hinge tender. Hinges to volume II are starting but firm. Front joint and hinge to volume III have failed and board is detached. Front endpaper has also detached. Rear joint and hinge to vol III is weak and may detach with further handling. Loss to the head and tail of spine to vol IV. Front joint and hinge to volume V are tender with cords showing. Rear joint to vol V is starting but firm with the hinge slightly strained but firm. Front joint and hinge to volume VI are strained. Loss to the head and tail of spine to volume VI also. Both joints and hinges to volume VII are tender with cords showing. Loss to the head of spine and joints to volume VIII. Front joint and hinge to volume VIII are strained but firm. Front hinge and joint to volume IX are weak and held by one cord only. May detach with further handling. Small crack to head of rear joint to vol IX resulting in the hinge being strained but firm. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown with the monogram C R.
