Buffon's work presents ''for the first time a complete survey of natural history in popular form'' PMM. The present set in the works rarest and most expensive form is exquisite. The subscription notices periodically mention copies printed on fine paper but they do not mention hand-coloured copies. Landwehr discussing the first Dutch-language edition no. 46 by the same publisher cites contemporary sources referring to four forms of publication: on regular paper on large paper with hand-coloured plates and most expensive of all with hand-coloured plates and vignettes.Buffon opens the first volume with an essay called "Théorie de la terre" where "for the first time he outlines a satisfactory account of the history of our globe and of its development as a fitting home for living things. In his view the earth had been originally part of the sun which was broken off by the impact of a comet. It gradually condensed from its gaseous state and the forces shaping its continents and mountains are still active'' PMM. From his exhaustive research for the Histoire naturelle des quadrupèdes Buffon came to the conclusion that it was necessary to reintroduce the notion of family. Breaking with the spirit of his time Buffon attempted to separate science from metaphysical and religious ideas. As a disciple of Locke he denied idealistic metaphysics stating that mental abstractions can never become principles of either existence or real knowledge; these can come only as the results of sensation'' DSB.Buffon did not believe in the fixity of species but proposed that nature is constantly changing. For instance in the case of quadrupeds he stated that there were 38 basic types that degenerated over the centuries. According to Buffon the monkey is a degenerated man the ass a degenerated horse. His interest in the precise connection between groups of animals that are obviously related prompted Buffon to devote much attention to comparative anatomy in the Histoire naturelle. He also stressed the importance of the study of earth sciences for botany and zoology. "Life and animation instead of being a metaphysical point in being is a physical property of matter" DSB. Buffon's views on the origin and development of species and the history of the earth show how he tried to describe natural phenomena by means of science discarding metaphysical and religious explanations. "He was the first to create an autonomous science free of any theological influence . and established the intellectual framework within which most naturalists up to Darwin worked" DSB.Buffon was assisted by the anatomist Louis Daubenton and others and the final volumes were completed after his death under the direction of Comte de Lacépède.With the owners name Sir George. Murray 1772-1846 on the half-title of most volumes. He was a Scottish soldier from a noble family who served in Flanders the West Indies Egypt and elsewhere eventually becoming quarter master general of Wellingtons staff in Spain and Portugal and reaching the rank of General. He was Knighted in 1813 held governorships of several colonies and the military college at Sandhurst along with leading posts at the Colonial Office where he helped establish the colony of Western Australia and served from 1823 as a member of the British parliament. With the bookplate of the German entrepreneur and bibliophile Hans Dedi 1918-2016. Lacking a few half-titles for example in the bird volumes 1 and 2 but otherwise in very good condition most of the plates fine with occasional stains and spots a few tears and repairs the binding also with some minor wear and repairs. After his death several other volumes were published making the total number of volumes 44. Together with Diderot's Encyclopaedia this work represents the peak of book printing of the French enlightenment. Georges-Louis Leclerc the Comte de Buffon engaged Edme-Louis Daubenton to supervise the coloured illustrations for the monumental Histoire Naturelle 1749–89. The Planches Enluminee started to appear in 1765 and finally accounted for 1008 plates all engraved by François-Nicolas Martinet 1731–1800 and all painted by hand. The Parisian publisher Panckoucke published a version without text between 1765 and 1783.<br>The Histoire Naturelle générale et particulière avec la description du Cabinet du Roi is an encyclopaedic collection of 36 large quarto volumes written between 1749 and 1789 by the Comte de Buffon. Unlike the illustrations he produced for other sections of Buffon's monumental work made primarily from stuffed specimens his work on birds was essentially executed from living models. To accomplish this vast project Jacques de Sève drew inspiration from the works of the king's ""Peintre ordinaire"" Jean-Baptiste Oudry. This judicious decision won him the favor of the queen a great admirer of the master of animal painting. By incorporating small Boucher-style putti in the introductory vignettes of certain volumes of the Histoire naturelle des oiseaux Sève also gained the good graces of the king's mistress. These illustrations at once decorative and scholarly which appear in the present first edition were not retained in the duodecimo edition. A superb complete copy of Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon's Histoire naturelle des oiseaux by the French Pliny. As Ferdinand Hoefer wrote this work maintains the same ""magnificence of style"" as the other publications in the Histoire naturelle générale et particulière. Imprimerie royale hardcover

Many species frogs snakes lizards salamanders turtles etc. are depicted in their natural habitat. The work is here in the new edition published at Amsterdam and Dordrecht the only quarto edition to rival the original French Imprimerie Royale edition. The last 2 leaves in vol. 1 give a list of the plates for both volumes.Georges Louis Leclerc 1707-1788 -- in 1717 his father became Comte de Buffon and Louis XV later made Georges Comte de Buffon -- was an inconspicuous student who only showed a special talent for mathematics. Initially he combined a career in finance with one in science translating important works by Hales and Newton into French. In 1739 Buffon became director of the Jardin du Roi later the Jardin des Plantes and the Histoire naturelle may have originated as a description of the royal collection. It appeared from 1749 to 1804 and eventually comprised 44 volumes. Buffon was assisted among others by the anatomist Louis Daubenton and the final volumes were completed after his death under the direction of Comte de Lacépède.From the Stedelijk Gymnasium Bibliotheek with its stamp on title-pages and a few flyleaves. The present series on reptiles and amphibians had been followed rather than preceded by the series on minerals so that the bindings are numbered 25 and 26. Scarce in this particular translation especially in this complete state. A very good early translation of this classic work in a lovely original binding. Some hinges needing attention but still great to see in this binding. Clean and bright internally. Natural History General and Particular discusses several differing species in the animal kingdom from Apes to the Hippopotamus. Volume IX is a corrections and additions volume providing lots of further information. There are 307 illustrated plates across all volumes conveying numerous animals such as dogs cats and elephants. Collated complete with all plates. Comte de Buffon was a French author and his natural history was originally published from 1749-1804. It spanned to an encyclopedic collection of 36 quartos. This English translation was published prior to the to completion of this work. The work ended up being limited to the animal and mineral kingdoms. This translation has numerous notes and observations by William Smellie a Scottish encyclopedist and naturalist. The Second Edition of this translation. In full tree calf bindings. Externally generally smart with patches of rubbing to the spines joints and extremities. Split to the front joint of volume I. Front hinge to volume I is tender with cords showing. Small loss to the head of spine to volume I. Rear joint to volume I is starting but firm with the hinge tender. Hinges to volume II are starting but firm. Front joint and hinge to volume III have failed and board is detached. Front endpaper has also detached. Rear joint and hinge to vol III is weak and may detach with further handling. Loss to the head and tail of spine to vol IV. Front joint and hinge to volume V are tender with cords showing. Rear joint to vol V is starting but firm with the hinge slightly strained but firm. Lignac's letters written to an anonymous American with the help of Bouguer was an attempt to refute Buffon and Condillac. Lignac's identified Buffon's attempts to subject natural phenomena to observation and experiment divorced from the literal biblical interpretation and provided an early criticism of the new scientific thinking. "Lignac's criticism was essentially that Buffon "contradicts Genesis in everything" ruins religion and drives God out of natural history." See Roger Jacques "Buffon A Life in Natural History" p. 192. The relevance of this work today is in the changes and challenges facing the French Academy as France entered into the modern era. Première partie con bollo di proprietà vistoso e con ex libris Polesini al retro del piatto. Il volume di quadrupedi eseguito da Daubenton faceva parte della pubblicazione Tableau encyclopédique et méthodique des trois regnes de la nature pubblicato sia a Parigi da Pankoucke sia a Padova alla Stamperia del Seminario. Legatura coeva in mezza pelle del primo Ottocento con titolo dorato al dorso qualche spellatura e piatti con carta marmorizzata. Louis Daubenton 1716-1799 descrisse circa 200 specie di quadrupedi nei primi volumi dell'opera di Buffon con tale esattezza e precisione da servire da base allo sviluppo dell'anatomia comparata.
