1840031494United Kingdom 1840. Painting. Very Good. Unframed. Original. 24 x 29.5 Cm. A collection of 43 very fine early/mid 19th century comparatively large approximately 285 x 235 mm original watercolour studies of different species of South African Ericas each autographed with the species name. Housed in a red straight-grained morocco case with closing flap and the words "In Memoriam Madre Mia" in memory of my mother. While there is no reference to the originator of these studies they are executed in a style close to that used by Henry C. Andrews for his Monograph on the Genus Erica 1804-1812. The present watercolours do not correspond directly to those but the composition is similiar and it is possible they were executed by Andrews in connection with the publication. Notwithstanding they are highly accomplished reminiscent of the best botanical artists of the day. They are painted onto fine-textured card; this card for a number of paintings is blind embossed to the corners "Reynolds extra superfine London board" or "Bristol Paper". These papers would appear to date the paintings to the 1840's which would fit with the style of the paintings and lettering however the straight-grained morocco case might suggest an earlier date The paintings are generally in very good condition the colours fresh vibrant and unfaded a few are a little dust marked the paper lightly age-toned one or two small marks. The case is a little worn and rubbed to the edges the tap to pull out the flap is missing the paintings are very tight when all are in the case. The publication history of this work is difficult to determine though it would appear to have been published between 1808-1813 and then discontinued. It also seemed to have later assumed the name 'Flora Parisiensis'. This copy includes the half-title page title page Flore Parisienne followed by 32 pages of text and 44 leaves of fine uncoloured stipple-engraved plates. This copy includes the original information slip which states "Les neuf premiers Livraisons renfermeront Les Nos 1-5 7-10 1315 17-20 22-26 28-32 34 35 37-41 45-53 59 61 68 des Planches. Les Nos. 6111216 21 formeront la dixieme Livraison. Les Nos. 27 33 36 42 43 la onzieme. Les Nos. 44 54 55 56 57 la douzieme." translated thus. " The first nine Deliveries parts will contain the Nos 1-5 7-10 13 15 17-20 22-26 28-32 34 35 37-41 45-53 59 61 68 of the plates. The nos. 6 11 12 16 21 will form the tenth Part. The nos. 27 33 36 4243 the eleventh. The nos. 44 54 55 56 57 the twelfth." It is our understanding that the later parts were never published - in fact the literature states that only 8 parts were published but the original publication slip here would suggest that in fact it was 9 parts. The number of plates present is 44 which conforms with the above numbers as far as the 9th part and therefore has the full complement of plates at least in this form Books at auction under the title Flora Parisiensis have stated 48 plates and include plate numbers 74-75 which are not mentioned on the publication slip here. The text finishes at page 32 and only goes up to plate 36 so is probably incomplete. This copy is unbound and housed in an old portfolio the leaves are uncut and the paper bright and and fresh without foxing a few leaves slightly worn at the edges plate 68 is torn and creased at the bottom edge in several places but not affecting the plate mark. Six volumes small octavo pp 588; 600 15; 584 10 uncut a few pages unopened a little age-toning and marking one gathering 347-350 in Volume IV detached and gatherings towards the rear of the volume becoming a bit weak and loose Volume VI has extra bis pages 343 - 354; very well illustrated with 197 engraved or wood engraved plates of which 31 are folding and 50 coloured plates of which 2 are folding and 1 folding table; bound in the original pink boards a bit worn chipped and marked original printed paper labels on the spines the upper cover of Volume V detached otherwise firm and tight a neat signature on each front endpaper. Apparently lacking one plate in Volume 1 Relative Sizes of the Planets though there is no sign of this ever having been bound in. There are several extra plates to those listed and our copy would seem to agree with the set at auction at Christie's in 2006 which contained 246 of 248 plates. A work of considerable charm and interest and despite some faults as mentioned a remarkable set in original unsophisticated state. Simeon Ackroyd Shaw 1785 - 1859 was a 19th-century English scientific writer industrial historian and teacher. He spent his working life in the Staffordshire Potteries now the city of Stoke-on-Trent England. Shaw originated in Lancashire and as a young man he arrived in the Potteries to work on the Potteries Gazette and Newcastle-under-Lyme Advertiser newspaper. After some 20 years of newspaper and printing work living in Wolstanton he then went into teaching. He ran several teaching academies in the district. His first book was this 6-volume work which was based on his obviously very comprehensive series of popular short lectures on everything from natural species to meteorites. First Edition. Boards. Octavo 6 x 9.5 inches 15.24 x 24.13 cm. Includes the original text in both English and Latin by George Shaw MD FRS. The Naturalist's Miscellany distinguished by the refined hand-colored copperplate engravings and astute naturalists' observations was aptly named as a diverse naturalists' compendium of the birds mammals reptiles insects fish and crustacean identified by seventeenth and eighteenth century naturalists spanning the globe particularly around the South Seas. Many of nature's most fascinating and unusual creatures were discovered during this period several of which were introduced through The Naturalist's Miscellany. Doctor George Shaw 1751-1813 Fellow of the Royal Society cofounder of the Linnaean Society as well as Zoologist of the British Museum contributed the text. Publication of the Naturalist's Miscellany ceased with his death in 1813. Upon the death of the artist FP Nodder 1770-1800 his wife Elizabeth and their son Richard Polydore Nodder 1793-1820 contributed artistically and editorially to the publication. Indeed a family affair both Frederick Polydore Nodder and his son Richard produced every one of the plates. A gifted and distinguished naturalist Frederick P. Nodder was the preferred Botanical Painter to Her Majesty Queen Charlotte. His early skills as botanical and animal draughtsman and engraver were honed from his association with Sir Joseph Banks who employed Nodder to complete and engrave the drawings from the sketchbooks of the late Sydney Parkinson. Parkinson accompanied Banks as botanical draughtsman aboard Captain James Cook's The Endeavor in 1771. Parkinson died on the return of this South Seas Voyage. These engravings along with the natural history collections of the British Museum were the basis for the mastery of the Naturalist's Miscellany. Frederick's son Richard P. Nodder a gifted animal painter in his own right was distinguished as botanic painter to King George III. At the time of its creation The Naturalist's Miscellany was highly coveted as a definitive natural history offering and as was the custom the work was issued in installments between 1790 and 1813. Each volume was dedicated by permission and dutifully inscribed to the most devoted patrons and contributors of the natural historical pursuits of eighteenth and early nineteenth century Britain: Queen Charlotte Sir Joseph Banks Thomas Pennant Esq. Two volumes handsomely bound by Sotheran Sackville Street London years 1855 and 1856. pp332 Volume 1855 with 12 highly attractive hand-coloured plates all with tissue guards very clean slight toning to just a few pages no inscriptions or annotation. pp 372 and bound to the back the pp33 Gardener's and Naturalist's Almanack 1856. Half leather bindings by Sotheran gilt decoration and lettering to spine title label to each volume some loss of colour to the spines but with lustre and strong no cracking. A cat recounts the troubles of her life and how she eventually came to her present pleasant situation. The tale is told in verse and illustrated with and-colored engravings. Rare with only two institutional copies located. Not in Necker.
