Whale 1896-1957 born July 22 1896 Dudley England; died May 29 1957 Hollywood California; English actor set designer and then director; imported to Hollywood in 1930 to direct the screen version of his state success "Journey's End"; best remembered for his four stylish horror films "Frankenstein"; "The Old Dark House"; "The Invisible Man" and "The Bride of Frankenstein"; retired from film in early 1940's to pursue painting; drowned in his swimming pool under mysterious circumstances.</p>
