George Howard Darwin was the fifth child of Charles Robert Darwin and Emma Wedgwood. George Darwin graduated from Trinity College Cambridge in 1868. In 1883 Darwin was elected Plumian professor of astronomy and experimental philosophy at Cambridge. Darwin delved deeply into the problems of the origin and evolution of the solar system making numerous investigations of the figures of equilibrium for rotating masses of fluid. A further application of Darwin's theory of tidal friction to the motion of the planets round the sun opened up the wider question of the genesis of the solar system.
