This study is the third in a series to review research on the biological effects of radiation and to explore the possibility of developing better methods to treat radiation-induced injury in the soldier. Early symptoms produced by whole-body radiation exposure are generally related to abnormal physiology and cellular lesions of the gastrointestinal tract. These symptoms have diagnostic value but the pathologic changes are not readily amenable to medical treatment. This report reviews recent research on the effects of radiation on the gastrointestinal tract of man and experimental animals. In reviewing the aspects of the radiation-induced "gastrointestinal syndrome" therapeutic opportunities were identified. Suggested areas for future research emphasis were summarized. Perhaps the greatest value of this report is Part II the critical literature review with an annotated evaluative bibliography.
