1880021282Wellington: The Office of James Hughes Colonial Museum & Geological Survey Department 1880. Illustrated with 64 slightly tinted plates octavo pp xvi 175 a couple of tiny ink spots on the fore-edge the title page slightly foxed otherwise very clean internaly the endpapers age-toned the front endpaper starting to crack but with absolutely no weakness probably contemporary brown patterned cloth very slightly worn the spine faded. The preface points out that one of the conditions to publication was that the plates should be nature-printed. This made it necessary to first publish a folio edition with a slightly different title which was indeed nature-printed. This was produced in a very small number. This octavo edition was then prepared for general distribution with the plates prepared by photo-lithography and depict the grasses one-half their natural size. Inscribed on the title page - "F.W. Andrews from Sir James Hector" - the latter was Director of the Colonial Museum and prepared the preface to the work. At the current time we also have a copy of the rare folio edition for sale.
