Hubbard was the dean of the British agrostologists with an encyclopedic knowledge of the world's grasses. He did not follow the increasingly popular view of recognizing four to six subfamilies by listing only two Festucoideae and Panicoideae and 27 tribes. Trinius prepared a summary of grass classification and synonymy in which he listed 2457 species along with their author and place of publication - this was a cornerstone of modern grass taxonomy. Bound in contemporary quarter leather and paper-covered boards the spine with raised bands and gilt decoration marbled endpapers. The boards are rubbed at the top and bottom margins with a little loss of the surface. The spine is faded and slightly rubbed. The rear free endpaper is missing a corner. A presentation inscription on the title page to 'Monsieur Prevost' signed by the author. From there it went to the French botanist Edmond Bonnet with his small Bibliotheque book label on the front endpaper. From there it moved to the library of the American zoologist Charles Atwood Kofoid with his attractive bookplate and accession numbe of C8999. A scarce book and a very desirable provenance. . Illustrated with 22 lithograph plates the margins are heavily oxidised - see illustrations pp xii 3216; viii 334 the text is very clean internally in original publisher's ornate blind-stamped green cloth very slightly worn a little faded unevenly. With signatures of J. Dixon Payne and of the botanist Ruby E. Dowling. RARE - ESPECIALLY IN ORIGINAL BINDING. De Candolle was also among the first to recognize the difference between the morphological and physiological characteristics of organs. He ascribed plant morphology as being related to the number of organs and their positions relative to each other rather than to their various physiological properties. Consequently this made him the first to attempt to attribute specific reasons for structural and numerical relationships amongst organs and thus to distinguish between major and minor aspects of plant symmetry. To account for modifications of symmetry in parts of different plants an occurrence that could hinder the discovery of an evolutionary relationship de Candolle introduced the concept of homology. De Candolle originated the idea of "Nature's war" which influenced Charles Darwin and the principle of natural selection. de Candolle recognized that multiple species may develop similar characteristics that did not appear in a common evolutionary ancestor; a phenomenon now known as convergent evolution. During his work with plants de Candolle noticed that plant leaf movements follow a near-24-hour cycle in constant light suggesting that an internal biological clock exists. Though many scientists doubted de Candolle's findings experiments over a century later demonstrated that "the internal biological clock" indeed exists. First British edition. Cloth. Good.
