With the bookplate of the alpine nurserman Will Ingwersen. RARE. Mackay 1775 - 1862 was a Scottish botanist who lived in Ireland. He discovered several species of plants new to the British Isles and contributed largely to Sir J. E. Smith's English Botany 1790-1814. His herbarium is preserved at Trinity College Dublin. The flora is a thorough one and is particualrly respected for its second volume on the mosses and algae which was written by Harvey & Taylor. First Edition. Half Leather. Good. The author was Piotr Feliksovich Maevsky 1851-1892. Significant edgewear to cover internally sound with minimal tanning of paper. Owner's signature and oil spot on ffep M. Kirshbaum another on end paper V. Rikovshky with oaktree bookplate of Heino Ross. Spine sl. frayed at top edge some insect damage to glued areas. The text contains keys to genera and species generic descriptions and Russian and Latin names of genera and species summaries of distribution by local government region and habitat flowering times and selected line drawings mostly showing both the whole plant and flowers or fruits. A compact yet comprehensive flora which went through several editions a third edited by B. He also served as president of the Accademia nazionale delle scienze and served as president of the Accademia Pontaniana six times from the 1830s through the 1850s. Two volumes small octavo pp xvi 348; xii 345 two page publisher's catalogue dated January 1856 at rear of second volume illustrated with two frontispieces a red plate of the Dhurma Rajah's seal and wood engravings in the text. Both volumes are original green cloth and have been neatly recased and rebacked with the original spines which are lacking pieces at the head and tail laid down the original yellow endpapers retained. Volume 1 - the hinge after the frontispiece cracking but absolutely no weakness the fore-edge is a little uneven and in three places it is worn into a slight groove. Volume 2 is better throughout. Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker 1817 - 1911 was a British botanist and explorer. He was a founder of geographical botany and Charles Darwin's closest friend. For twenty years he served as director of the Royal Botanical Gardens Kew succeeding his father William Jackson Hooker and was awarded the highest honours of British science. His expedition to the Himalayas lasted three years and he was the first European to collect plants there; he was among many things responsible for the introduction of many Rhododendrons toBritish gardens.
