The author was Piotr Feliksovich Maevsky 1851-1892. Significant edgewear to cover internally sound with minimal tanning of paper. Owner's signature and oil spot on ffep M. Kirshbaum another on end paper V. Rikovshky with oaktree bookplate of Heino Ross. Spine sl. frayed at top edge some insect damage to glued areas. The text contains keys to genera and species generic descriptions and Russian and Latin names of genera and species summaries of distribution by local government region and habitat flowering times and selected line drawings mostly showing both the whole plant and flowers or fruits. A compact yet comprehensive flora which went through several editions a third edited by B. Illustrated with 22 lithograph plates the margins are heavily oxidised - see illustrations pp xii 3216; viii 334 the text is very clean internally in original publisher's ornate blind-stamped green cloth very slightly worn a little faded unevenly. With signatures of J. Dixon Payne and of the botanist Ruby E. Dowling. RARE - ESPECIALLY IN ORIGINAL BINDING. De Candolle was also among the first to recognize the difference between the morphological and physiological characteristics of organs. He ascribed plant morphology as being related to the number of organs and their positions relative to each other rather than to their various physiological properties. Consequently this made him the first to attempt to attribute specific reasons for structural and numerical relationships amongst organs and thus to distinguish between major and minor aspects of plant symmetry. To account for modifications of symmetry in parts of different plants an occurrence that could hinder the discovery of an evolutionary relationship de Candolle introduced the concept of homology. De Candolle originated the idea of "Nature's war" which influenced Charles Darwin and the principle of natural selection. de Candolle recognized that multiple species may develop similar characteristics that did not appear in a common evolutionary ancestor; a phenomenon now known as convergent evolution. During his work with plants de Candolle noticed that plant leaf movements follow a near-24-hour cycle in constant light suggesting that an internal biological clock exists. Though many scientists doubted de Candolle's findings experiments over a century later demonstrated that "the internal biological clock" indeed exists. First British edition. Cloth. Good. Small slim 12mo pp 2 124 a hand-coloured frontispiece map pages age-toned but otherwise very clean and sound a little browning to the frontispiece and title page with the book label of Baronet Bron=mhead of Thurlby Hall on the front endpaper original green polished cloth with gilt decoration on upper cover showing an ornate vase of flowers slight marks and bumps the spine label appears to have been hand-written on paper but is now largely lacking. RARE AND A VERY GOOD COPY. Godfrey Howitt - 1800-1873 - was physician to the Nottingham General Hospital from 1829 to 1839 and was keenly interested in science and literature. He wrote this standard work The Flora of Nottinghamshire and discovered a new species of catchfly which grew on the Castle Rock. Professor John Wilson "Christopher North" of Edinburgh made the "Ettrick Shepherd" in Blackwoods Magazine described his as "Ane o' the best botanists in England an' a desperate beetle hunter." His ardent love for collecting accompanied him to Australia and he bequeathed his natural history collection and library to the Melbourne Museum The Howitt Collection. He also gave £1000 to found scholarships in Natural History in the University. In 1847 he became one of the first physicians to the Melbourne Hospital and had the experience of being paid his fees in gold dust by miners who consulted him professionally. . First Edition. Cloth.
