A collection of stories by "the Mother of Modern African Literature" centered around life for women in Nigeria. From the lower wrap: "Skilfully sic she recaptures in print the frustrations Lagos life holds for our women and naturally places a lot of the blame on men who have proved to be unreliable." According to the Nigerian newspaper The Guardian Nwapa was the first female African novelist to be published in in Britain in English partially financed by a supportive Chinua Achebe who is listed as Editorial Advisor for this title. Her first two were novels published as part of Heinemann's African Writers Series. In 1970 she founded the Tana Press becoming one of Nigeria's first female publishers. 191626009<p>Rare and complete true first edition 1916 of the incredible memoir of Flora Sandes—the only British woman to officially serve as a combat soldier in the Great War.</p><p>While other women served in nursing or support roles Sandes joined the Serbian 2nd Infantry Regiment as a private fought in the trenches was wounded by a grenade in hand-to-hand combat and was eventually promoted to Sergeant-Major. She was decorated with the Order of the Kara George Star for her bravery under fire.</p><p>Edition Details:<br />True First Edition: Published by Hodder & Stoughton 1916.<br />Verification: Title page bears the Roman numerals "MCMXVI" 1916.<br />Completeness: This copy is fully complete containing the frontispiece Colonel Militch and all 13 additional internal photographic plates including the iconic "Author in Khaki" at p. 148.</p><p>As Issued: Bound in the original pale orange-brown cloth; as was common for this wartime edition it was issued without a pictorial dust jacket.<br />Condition Report:<br />Internal: Very Good. A scarce book that fairly regularly pops up at auction and can sometimes make considerably in excess of what I am asking for this copy. Original publisher's black boards - gilt embossed to the spine. 100 lovely colour plates after Flora H. Mitchell with accompanying text. A very good plus copy in very good jacket. No inscriptions. A bump to the upper rear board corner and a slight bump to the upper front board corner. A light bump to the head of the spine. The jacket hasn't been price-clipped. Two short tears to the peripheries have been repaired to the verso with what appear to be strips of sellotape no browning. There are also a couple of slight nicks to the head / tail of the spine of the jacket which appear to have been repaired with tiny strips of archival tape. Light rubbing to the jacket - head and tail of the spine and a tiny strip of rubbing close to the 'A' of vanishing. A very good plus copy in very good jacket of a book that has a rare virtue - intrinisc value. Allen Figgis hardcover

A series of 50 paintings some copies are listed as having 100 illustrations - this is incorrect 100 on the list of illustrations refers to the relevant page number of old Dublin architecture much of which had disappeared even at the time when this book was printed. This collection of material was archived by Flora McKay McNulty with the vast majority of it concerning her in particular either as correspondence or records kept by. McNulty acted in a variety of positions and capacities in both the Ladies of the Maccabees of the World and the Ancient Order of United Workmen it appears to be primarily she was the recorder for both. Both of the groups appear to have been very active in the Montana mining town of Virginia City Montana. <br /> <br /> The Ladies of the Maccabees of the World were the female auxiliary for the Knights of the Maccabees a fraternal organization that primarily offered low-cost insurance to members. The Degree of Honor were the female auxiliary for the Ancient Order of United Workmen which was a fraternal benefits society that was formed shortly after the American Civil War. <br /> <br /> Flora McKay McNulty 1861-1945 was an influential community leader in Virginia City where her accolades are lengthy McNulty was a doctor one of the first female M.D.s in the state was instrumental in the building of the Library patron of the arts paid for the higher education of numerous local young adults and with her sister Mary were at the center of social life in Virginia City for many years. The McNulty home is intact and located in the Virginia City National Historic Landmark District. <br /> <br /> This collection spans four decades but most of this collection dates from 1896 to 1902. Includes a manuscript roll-call; printed notices from the L.O.T.M.O.T.W headquarters in Port Huron Michigan; printed L.O.T.M.O.T.W. reports with blanks to be filled in; TLS on L.O.T.M.O.T.W. letterhead; various printed ephemera from the L.O.T.M.O.T.W.; manuscript financial report for the L.O.T.M.O.T.W.; program for Madison County Federation of Women's Club; semiannual reports for the A.O.U.W. that are printed with manuscript entries; Degrees of Honor from the A.O.U.W.; printed/manuscript receipts from the A.O.U.W. unknown

"Sir William Johnson 1st Baronet c.1715-11 July 1774 was an Irish official of the British Empire. As a young man Johnson moved to the Province of New York to manage an estate purchased by his uncle Admiral Peter Warren which was located amidst the Mohawk one of the Six Nations of the Iroquois League. Johnson learned the Mohawk language and Iroquois customs and was appointed the British agent to the Iroquois. Because of his success he was appointed in 1756 as British Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the northern colonies. Throughout his career as a British official among the Iroquois Johnson combined personal business with official diplomacy acquiring tens of thousands of acres of Native land and becoming very wealthy."-wiki. A little light partial browning to the half-title and final text leaf but a lovely crisp copy thereafter. Former owner name and date inked to the head of the front free endpaper. Very good in a somewhat distressed example of the uncommon dust wrapper featuring two further Lamb drawings which do not appear in the text. The wrapper is price-clipped and chipped with two one-inch sized portions of loss to the top edge two further small areas of edge-loss and a little dust soiling and chafing several tiny closed tears and several small areas of surface abrasion. 19410010019On offer is the 1941 to 1942 diary of 64-year-old Michigan resident Flora Coyne. This interesting notebook chronicles one woman's experiences in rural America during World War Two and includes an entry on the day Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. <br /><br />Coyne was born in 1876 and lived her life in rural Michigan. She passed away in 1947 at the age of 70. Her husband Patrick had passed away in 1936 five years before she wrote this diary. She had one son Basil. <br /><br />Coyne does not follow the dated entries in this diary but records her days using whatever space she requires. Her entries detail the daily comings and goings of her family and circle of friends. <br /><br />"Charley Mauley Basil & I drove to Harrison Mich to Conservation sale of land. E 1/4 of NW 1/4 of Sec 5-18-6 of Freeman Twp 83& 92/100 acres. All this time there was lots of snow in Clare Co. We got back to L George had dinner and Mauley left for Bannister" January 24 1941. "Got electric pump from Mr. Luce. New $34.95. Did usual work" July 24 1941. <br /><br />"Nice bright day. Cleaned up house. Baked cookies. Every one of deer hunters class was out in the woods. Bernard came about 7 PM. He came alone -- told us Mary was going home to . Mr. Dodge and Miller called in evening. Came up to Jeffrey's cottage to hunt deer. Told us about Peanut being so sick" November 15 1941. <br /><br />". Basil left for Pontiac. Shortly after they left we heard the news over the radio that Japan had attacked our islands of Hawaii and bombed Honolulu & Pearl Harbor killing many soldiers and wounding many others. As day advanced to nite more news of attacks on Pacific Islands and Philippines Islands also. In Washington our capital plans were being made to declare war on the Empire of Japan by Congress and our President Roosevelt" December 7 1941. <br /><br />This 5-year diary measures 5 inches by 4 inches and contains 365 pages. The covers are in fair condition showing some wear and weathering. The strap on the clasp is broken. The spine has broken but the covers remain attached as do all of the pages. The pages themselves are in good condition and the handwriting is legible. The diary spans from January 1941 to August 1942. Coyne did not write every day. <br /><br />This diary presents a straightforward account of daily life in rural Michigan as the United States enters into World War Two. The descriptions paint a clear picture of her daily routines and the names mentioned can serve as a cross-reference for genealogical research in Michigan. For a researcher in women's studies this book offers a good illustration of the social role that formed the experience of many women prior to WWII. hardcover
