Slightly cocked spine toning on the endpapers and slight wear on the board edges thus very good.

According to the preface of the revised edition; "After training to be a doctor at the London School of Medicine for Women Flora Murray became an active member of the Women's Social and Political Union. At the outbreak of the First World War she and her fellow suffragists laid down their banners and sought to aid the Allied war effort. Working within the newly formed Women's Hospital Corps Murray and her colleague Louisa Garrett Anderson overcame initial prejudice and established two military hospitals in France in the period 1914 -1915. Their success prompted an invitation from the War Office to open the Endell Street Military Hospital in London staffed entirely by women. First published in 1920 Murray’s account illustrated with numerous photographs records important steps in furthering the acceptance of women in the medical profession. For female doctors surgeons and nurses the war provided not only the ‘occasion for service’ but also ‘get professional opportunities.’

In Beatrice Harraden’s preface in the original text she writes “This record of the work of the Women’s Hospital Corps in France and especially at the Military Hospital Endell Street is a valuable contribution to the literature of the Women Movement. Dr. Flora Murray and Dr. Garrett Anderson made history at Endell Street. Through their initiative endeavor and efficiency they opened the doors to further fields of opportunity for women physicians and surgeons and not only for medical women but for all women who are setting out or have already set out to conquer fresh territory. We owe them a debt of gratitude the recognition of which will become even more accentuated as the years go on.â€

A nice copy of an important women's medical text. 1946560415Napoli / Roma: Gaspare Casella Editore / De Luigi Editore 1946. Softcover. Very Good. Nos. 1-18 in 15 issues i.e. three double issues. Slim octavos. Text in Italian. Printed wrappers paper still supple. Owner's signature of author and critic Michele Cantarella a leading anti-fascist Italian expatriate on the cover of one issue and three issues with a bit of pencilled marginal bracketing by him. Modest toning wear and soil a few tiny tears at the spine ends the first five issues with the pages somewhat toned and occasional very light foxing mostly confined to the first and last leaves a nice very good or better run of this somewhat delicate Italian literary magazine that featured two publishers and three editors during this time period. Of particular note is the inclusion of "Angoscia" "Anguish" later known as "Anguish in the Barracks" in issue 16 a very early possibly the earliest published story by Italo Calvino predating his first book by two years. The final issue prints a "Referendum" of four questions for poets about their work and claim that they have already received responses from Eugenio Montale Cesare Pavesi Corrado Alvaro and others and will begin publishing their responses in the next issue but the magazine ceased publication with No. 17/18. A well-preserved set of a cheaply wartime- printed magazine. Gaspare Casella Editore / De Luigi Editore unknown
