Slightly cocked spine toning on the endpapers and slight wear on the board edges thus very good.<br /> <br /> According to the preface of the revised edition; "After training to be a doctor at the London School of Medicine for Women Flora Murray became an active member of the Women's Social and Political Union. At the outbreak of the First World War she and her fellow suffragists laid down their banners and sought to aid the Allied war effort. Working within the newly formed Women's Hospital Corps Murray and her colleague Louisa Garrett Anderson overcame initial prejudice and established two military hospitals in France in the period 1914 -1915. Their success prompted an invitation from the War Office to open the Endell Street Military Hospital in London staffed entirely by women. First published in 1920 Murray’s account illustrated with numerous photographs records important steps in furthering the acceptance of women in the medical profession. For female doctors surgeons and nurses the war provided not only the ‘occasion for service’ but also ‘get professional opportunities.’<br /> <br /> In Beatrice Harraden’s preface in the original text she writes “This record of the work of the Women’s Hospital Corps in France and especially at the Military Hospital Endell Street is a valuable contribution to the literature of the Women Movement. In Good minus condition. Bound in blue cloth with titling to front board. Spine has gilt titling. Boards have bumping and fraying to corners paper residue adhered to the front board fading and scuff marks throughout and cocked boards. Textblock is lacking the front free end pages has stains to the bottom edges of pages 34-35 splitting to the hinges and splitting to the gutter between page 72-73 and from pages 112-193. Textblock has green paper adhered to the photograph that is verso of page 169 slightly impacting image a library label to the rear pastedown red paper residue adhered to the rear free end page minor soiling scattered to some pages and light age toning throughout. Contains several pieces of ephemera including a letter from "Society of Apothecaries of London" a booklet titled "Infant feeding in Cases of Disordered Nutrition" a postcard and midwife certificate. Shelved in Case 4. Flora Murray 1869-1923 was a pioneering Scottish physician suffragette and advocate for women in medicine.<br /> <br> <br /> In 1912 Murray co-founded the Women’s Hospital for Children in London with her lifelong partner Dr. Louisa Garrett Anderson a fellow physician and suffragette. This hospital offered healthcare to working-class children and crucial clinical opportunities for women doctors who at a time were barred from most mainstream medical roles. <br /> <br> <br /> With the outbreak of World War I Murray and Anderson established the Women’s Hospital Corps WHC initially offering their services to the French Red Cross when the British authorities refused to accept women doctors in military medicine. Under the WHC they and their all-female medical teams set up hospitals in Paris and Wimereux treating wounded soldiers and demonstrating women’s capacity for military medical leadership. Their success led the British War Office to invite them back to London to run the Endell Street Military Hospital 1915–1919 the first British military hospital staffed entirely by women. Murray served as doctor-in-charge while Anderson was chief surgeon.<br /> <br> <br /> Throughout their lives Murray and Anderson maintained a close personal and professional partnership. Murray dedicated her 1920 wartime memoir “Women as Army Surgeons†to Anderson describing her as “bold cautious true and my loving companion.†After the war they lived together until Murray’s death in 1923. 1409548. 1938163880N.p.: N.p. 1938. James Hilton's typescript draft screenplay for the 1939 film an adaptation of his own 1937 novel the only such adaptation he ever completed. With the author's profuse manuscript ink annotations as well as many pages executed entirely in manuscript ink throughout. <br /> <br /> Included is a privately commissioned essay by Hilton scholar Kurt Kausler detailing both the history of Hilton's work on the film an analysis and a breakdown of the manuscript.<br /> <br /> Almost certainly Hilton's first corrected manuscript screenplay for the film. After Jack Warner raised concerns about the script being too long screenwriter Milton Krims was employed to clean up and shorten it-though in the end Hilton received sole credit as screenwriter.<br /> <br /> A man hires an Austrian governess and both are suspected of murder when his wife is discovered to be dead.<br /> <br /> 123 leaves a gathering demonstrating the author's method his attention to detail and his extreme frugality with the use of paper the last most likely due to wartime shortages. The script consists of a ribbon copy typescript leaves on both onionskin and paper stock with manuscript emendations on virtually every page in many cases both recto and verso with some leaves executed on the versos of unrelated previous work by Hilton b leaves consisting entirely of text executed in manuscript ink c hand-cut partial leaves and d a handful of later Xerographically duplicated facsimiles of Hilton's original annotated typescript leaves. <br /> <br /> Included is a very detailed analysis of the manuscript as well as the events surrounding its creation along with a detailed breakdown of the manuscript elements.<br /> <br /> Hilton's manuscript leaves Very Good to Fine quite supple and well preserved. Housed in a modern white three-ring binder. Leaves individually held in modern mylar page protectors. N.p. unknown

This collection of material was archived by Flora McKay McNulty with the vast majority of it concerning her in particular either as correspondence or records kept by. McNulty acted in a variety of positions and capacities in both the Ladies of the Maccabees of the World and the Ancient Order of United Workmen it appears to be primarily she was the recorder for both. Both of the groups appear to have been very active in the Montana mining town of Virginia City Montana. <br /> <br /> The Ladies of the Maccabees of the World were the female auxiliary for the Knights of the Maccabees a fraternal organization that primarily offered low-cost insurance to members. The Degree of Honor were the female auxiliary for the Ancient Order of United Workmen which was a fraternal benefits society that was formed shortly after the American Civil War. <br /> <br /> Flora McKay McNulty 1861-1945 was an influential community leader in Virginia City where her accolades are lengthy McNulty was a doctor one of the first female M.D.s in the state was instrumental in the building of the Library patron of the arts paid for the higher education of numerous local young adults and with her sister Mary were at the center of social life in Virginia City for many years. The McNulty home is intact and located in the Virginia City National Historic Landmark District. <br /> <br /> This collection spans four decades but most of this collection dates from 1896 to 1902. Includes a manuscript roll-call; printed notices from the L.O.T.M.O.T.W headquarters in Port Huron Michigan; printed L.O.T.M.O.T.W. reports with blanks to be filled in; TLS on L.O.T.M.O.T.W. letterhead; various printed ephemera from the L.O.T.M.O.T.W.; manuscript financial report for the L.O.T.M.O.T.W.; program for Madison County Federation of Women's Club; semiannual reports for the A.O.U.W. that are printed with manuscript entries; Degrees of Honor from the A.O.U.W.; printed/manuscript receipts from the A.O.U.W. unknown

Inscribed by Mitchell to a couple "To remember Dublin as they knew it." Fifty of Mitchell's critically acclaimed watercolors of Dublin are reproduced here along with descriptions. A scarce book that fairly regularly pops up at auction and can sometimes make considerably in excess of what I am asking for this copy. Original publisher's black boards - gilt embossed to the spine. 100 lovely colour plates after Flora H. Mitchell with accompanying text. A very good plus copy in very good jacket. No inscriptions. A bump to the upper rear board corner and a slight bump to the upper front board corner. A light bump to the head of the spine. The jacket hasn't been price-clipped. Two short tears to the peripheries have been repaired to the verso with what appear to be strips of sellotape no browning. There are also a couple of slight nicks to the head / tail of the spine of the jacket which appear to have been repaired with tiny strips of archival tape. Light rubbing to the jacket - head and tail of the spine and a tiny strip of rubbing close to the 'A' of vanishing. A very good plus copy in very good jacket of a book that has a rare virtue - intrinisc value. Allen Figgis hardcover

A series of 50 paintings some copies are listed as having 100 illustrations - this is incorrect 100 on the list of illustrations refers to the relevant page number of old Dublin architecture much of which had disappeared even at the time when this book was printed.
