This is No. 20 from the Saint Augustine Historical Society. Front cover has a title variant from the formal title page. Front cover reads Memoirs of a Westpointer in St. Augustine 1824-1826. Alfred Beckley May 26 1802 – May 26 1888 was a public official who founded Beckley West Virginia and a brigadier general in the Virginia militia during the American Civil War. He named the city of Beckley in honor of his father John James Beckleyab who was the first librarian of the United States Congress. Beckley was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point nominated for West Point by William Henry Harrison and President James Monroe; he entered on September 25 1819 and graduated on July 1 1823 ninth in a graduating class of 35. This class started with 86 cadets in 1819. He was in the army for 13 years serving the entire time as an artillery officer in Pennsylvania Florida Virginia and New York. In 1834–1835 after legal disputes Beckley received the title to 56679 acres his father had owned in western Virginia. In order to manage his inherited estates Beckley resigned his officer's commission on October 24 1836. He then settled in Fayette County now Raleigh County West Virginia which was then part of Virginia finding it a "perfect wilderness". His home named Wildwood was built in 1835–1836 expanded in 1874 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. Beckley returned to military service as a brigadier general in the Virginia Militia from 1849 to 1861; serving out of loyalty to his state even though he strongly opposed its secession from the Union. By summer 1861 Beckley was in charge of the 12th Brigade of Virginia militia against Union troops at Cotton Hill West Virginia in the Kanawha Valley. This region was largely pro-Union and his militia was not highly motivated so Wise condemned Beckley's unit in August 1861. Thus it only served until October 1861 contributing little to the Confederate cause. He officially resigned his commission on February 8 1862. Returning to Union-occupied Beckley he surrendered to the Union officer in charge Rutherford B. Hayes on March 16–17 1862. He was then arrested by the Union army on April 3 1862 and sent first to the Atheneum prison camp near Wheeling West Virginia and then to Camp Chase near Columbus Ohio as a prisoner of war. He claimed that he was really pro-Union but had simply been loyal to Virginia and had severed all ties with the Confederacy. He was released on June 18 1862 and arrived back in Raleigh County on June 26 1862. Cecil DeGrotte Eby Jr. was a retired professor of English He was born in Charles Town West Virginia. Eby earned a Bachelor of Arts from Shepherd College in 1950 a Master of Arts from Northwestern University in 1951 and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1958. He also earned an honorary A.B. from Western Maryland College in 1988. Eby served in the 16th fleet of the U.S. Navy from 1945-46. He then entered graduate school to prepare himself for an academic career. Eby was an assistant professor of English at James Madison University in Harrisonburg Virginia 1957-60. He then joined the faculty of Washington and Lee University in Lexington Virginia where he remained until 1965. Eby spent the remainder of his academic career at the University of Michigan 1965-95 where he retired as professor of English. During his career Eby wrote 9 critically acclaimed books. Polish collector of insects and plants in Peru. Woytkowski emigrated to Peru in 1929 where he collected more than a thousand insect species new to science and copious botanical specimens. He together with his new wife Helena was lured to Peru by a settlement company whose advertisements promised free passage and a homestead farm. In reality after landing in Callao he found himself with hundreds of other Europeans in a shanty immigrant camp waiting in vain for their free land. While most gave up and returned to their homes Woytkowski decided to stay in Peru with Helena and their four-year-old son settling in Yamaquezù near Oxapampa where he established himself as a naturalist collecting insects and plants to send to scientists in the United States and Europe. He was for seven years employed exclusively by the Swiss pharmaceutical firm CIBA looking for plants that could be used in medicines and also served on the staff of San Marcos University as a professor of French and La Molina College of Agriculture in Lima. Here he built up an extensive herbarium though he was best known for his entomological collections. He made numerous trips into Peru's mountainous areas and explored all the country's provinces both independently and on behalf of research institutions including the University of California and Missouri Botanical Garden. Although successful in his collecting career his family life was somewhat unhappy due to his constant need to move around which led his wife to leave him in the 1940s. After more than 30 years collecting in Peru he was dealt another blow when he found he could not draw a small pension from the Botanic Garden in Lima as he had never taken Peruvian citizenship. He thus returned to Poland in 1965 by now a strange land to him. Removed from his life's work and suffering in the colder climate he died in Krakow where he had been staying with his brother. Numerous insects are named in his honour including a genus of army ants. The plant genus Woytkowskia Woodson is also named for him. This memoir was published in Polish in 1974. First English edition. A very good copy. In the summer of 1988 under NATO sponsorship approximately 80 scientists lived and worked together in Plymouth for two weeks to evaluate the ecological role of protozoa in the sea. Through the convivial surroundings close working conditions and special facilities that had been brought together for NATO ASI 604/87 a 'melting pot' of ideas was formed which stimulated the multidisciplinary creativity which is expressed in this book and in a second series of papers which will be published in Marine Microbial Food Webs under the title - 'Protozoa and their Role in Marine Microbial Food Webs'. Discussions of the role of protozoa in the microbial food web in the cycling of carbon and nitrogen and the extent to which this web acts as a link or sink to metazoa in the water column were major themes of the ASI. Structured sessions covering oral and poster presentations field work model 1 ing laboratory practicals and demonstrations of techniques such as image analysis and flow cytometry formed the core of the meeting. Participants took part enthusiastically in the practical sessions developing new concepts and obtaining new insights into their work. The practicals included a 'protozoo' and some beautiful films and videos. Field excursions were made to a range of sites including a unique marine sewage farm at Looe in Cornwall Jones this volume.
