18704150048Verlag der Buchhandlung des Waisenhauses 1870. Text in German Gothic Script. This book is in its orignal binding a marbled red blue and cream cover half-bound with tan leather with a hubbed spine and gold lettering to the backstrip. The cover is in poor condition the leather being scuffed through on the corners and the top bottom and edges of the backstrip. The faces of the covers also show additional signs of minor wear. The binding remained firm throughout the book and the leaves are slightly browned with age especially towards the edges. The outer edges of the pageblock are sprinkled with brown paint. The text remains in fair condition overall with no annotations foxing or other significant markings other than a small amount of ink marginalia on a couple of pages. The majority of the library markings are inside the back cover although there are some inside the front cover.This book has hardback covers. Ex-library With usual stamps and markings In poor condition suitable as a reading copy. No dust jacket. After an unsuccessful run for the state parliament in 1861 he left politics and worked as a doctor for the rest of his life. As a writer he devoted himself to politics and economics. Softcover pamphlet bound into later marbled wraps with new endpapers. 68 pages. The pages are a bit darkened with soiling and some light foxing to the first and last few pages. The bottom front corners of the first few pages are creased. Good. <p>First edition.<p>The Scottish educational reformer and political economist William Ballantyne Hodgson 1815-1880 matriculated at the University of Edinburgh when only 14 years old. He first supported himself by lecturing on literature education and phrenology before being appointed secretary to the Mechanics' Institute of Liverpool in 1839. He was instrumental in establishing a girls' school as part of the Liverpool Institute and was appointed its principal. He held subsequent posts as a school principal and argued for the education of women at the Royal Institution of Manchester. After traveling to Paris where he attended classes at the College of Surgeons he returned to Edinburgh to lecture on physiology. In 1854 he lectured on economic science at the Royal Institution in London. Hodgson was examiner in political economy at London University from 1863 to 1868. Despite retiring in 1870 he took the position when appointed to the new Chair of political economy and mercantile law at the University of Edinburgh in 1871. Some browning to edges of end blanks from offset. Generally sound and clean. Trial began in March of 1850. The prosecution had to try Webster without showing the corpus delicti or proof of the murder namely the body. Nevertheless on March 30th the jury unanimously found him guilty and he was hanged on August 30th. Webster's trial was one of the first murder convictions based on the testimony of the medical experts and other evidence produced by the prosecution that established guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. .
