The collection includes over 150 dated and signed letters written to and a few items from Dr. Lucinda DeLeftwich Templin 1888-1969 author historian & collector ".one of El Paso's best-loved and most distinguished educators - in 1916 she took her undergraduate and Master's at U. of Missouri and became Dean of Lindenwood College in St. Charles MO. did doctoral work at Harvard and Columbia and took over as principal at the Radford School in 1927 at the time called El Paso School for Girls; Dr. Templin interested Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Radford of Webster Grove Mo. in the school and the Radfords paid off the mortgage provided an endowment fund that insured the institution's stability and the name of the school was changed in honor of these benefactors. During Dr. Templin's administration Radford School grew to a nationally accredited school for girls in the Southwest and when she retired in 1967 the 22-acre campus had more than $1000000 in physical improvements and was debt-free. Dr. Templin had also completed plans for construction of a $400000 library and museum on property owned by the school; she was a member of the nation's leading educational organizations and honorary societies named consistently to Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Education; author of numerous publications most of which were concerned with the field of education. Hooper inquiring about the appointment of Smith and further explaining that Smith was to take the place of Ezra A. Tuttle of Eastport and asking him of all this directly ".because of the complicated situation which exists at present in Albany." F.H. Hooper 1851 - 1914 considered one of the main proponents of the founding of the school and a prominent Brooklyn NY & national educator; with a copy of the Aug. 23rd 1913 completed and signed Oath of Office of Smith witnessed and notarized; and the Aug. 26 letter regarding the office signed by Mitchell May the Sec. of State of NY; On Aug. 28 Franklin Hooper acknowledges the receipt of the letter of appointment & oath & gives notification of the next Board meeting with mailing envelope; with the October 15th 1913 8-page typed document signed "Estimate of Money Needed for Running Expenses of the New York State School of Agriculture on Long Island from January 1st 1914 to January 1st 1915" prepared by A.A. Johnson and signed by him in ink at the introductory passage and which gives a detailed budget for the school various departments salaries the demonstration farm and more in the original blue paper over-folder; a December 16 1913 typed letter 2 pages signed by Hooper writing to all the Board which declares that ".on Thursday December 11 representatives of the State Comptroller and of the State Attorney General went to Farmingdale and that Messrs. Mott Smith and Ruland were on that day paid by the State Comptroller for their three farms respectively in pursuance of the contract as made by the Board of Trustees of the school and the three vendors.thereby completing the transaction for the purchase of lands for the school. It is now possible for members of the Board of Trustees to enter upon the lands and to prepare to use them for the purposes of the school." and with further information regarding the surveying of the property and a February 5 1914 TLS by Hooper to Smith regarding information to be sent to Lathrop Brown; the letters with old fold lines light wear and in very good condition; envelopes worn stained used; overall in very good condition and an excellent group of letters regarding the historical foundation of the school at Farmingdale the oldest public institution of higher education on Long Island. 19274222Southern U.S. 1927. Small ledger bound in pebbled leather over card measuring 7.5 x 4.5 inches. With events taking place across Tennessee Virginia Washington DC North Carolina and other Southern states this journal is comprised of 118 handwritten pages unfolding across a decade. The ledger was clearly a plaything of Ethel and her siblings in earlier years as they have left childish handwriting and notes dated 1911 to the pastedowns and endpapers. However the main content unfolds from 1916-1927 as Ethel claims the book for her diary and leaves us an account of how a girl moved from her teenage years and into womanhood while the world radically changed around her.<br/><br/>Ethel's tone in her opening entry is a reminder that teenage angst and ennui are not new inventions. "April 25 1916. I write this on a Wednesday. Nothing happened. Same old thing school school school." Despite feeling the sameness of her days it doesn't take long for Ethel to open up about the variety of experiences and feelings that really do shape her time. Revivals and Red Cross meetings take up multiple evenings after school; and she loves to read as an escape novels include escapist and sensational romances like George Barr's Nedra 1905 though she describes it as "same old life reading." By 1918 she also starts attending Patriotic Meetings as she reports "Germany's advancing" a concise announcement that is surrounded by news of boys she knows joining their companies and a string of weddings in advance. Global realities hit on the same week she begins school again in September for her observation "first week of school Don't think the lessons will be very hard" is immediately followed by reports of larger hardships a month later: "All the schools are closed on account of the flu. Several people have died with it. Duey Hines was buried yesterday she died in Richmond.in a hospital.Marton Sneed was buried yesterday.he died in Charlotte of Flu." Ultimately the flu grips her in a way the war cannot. "Friday 22 November 1918 Celebrated Armistice.School was opened after five weeks. We went to school for three weeks then it was closed again. December 3 1918. Tuesday all five of us down with the flu." Her December 5 entry is a string of named of friends who died of flu or are badly ailing and she does not write again until the new year.<br/><br/>The entries of 1919 reflect a new level of maturity in Ethel's hand and her voice; as a young woman she now has more freedom and more mobility and she seems rejuvenated by drives and visits with friends new dresses and fashions picnics and shows. Several nearby locations have moving picture shows which seem to replace the Revivals in her heart and her schedule. As she and her friends prepare for commencement in June she reports getting class rings and regalia and a spate of friends' weddings. And then. "January 6 1920. School turned out for the flu Tuesday. A good many cases in town. Uncle Tom sick for two weeks. The flu is awfully bad the people are opening an emergency hospital in our Sunday school." Amidst the tragedy and seeking scapegoats the town erupts in racial violence. "March 8 1920. Arnold's store burned down.negro boy killed last night." In the years the follow Ethel reports courtships getting a job and becoming a modern working woman. She reflects very little on how she was able to gain this freedom but clearly enjoys building a life of her own. <br/><br/>A research rich diary with opportunities for studying the transmission of the 1918 flu and its various spikes the role of troops moving through communities in spreading disease the historical relationship between pandemic and education the role of suffrage in expanding women's education employment travel opportunities and genealogy. unknown books

Lightly toned throughout but otherwise unmarked without the signs of kitchen use common in such books. Scarce in trade OCLC reports no copies of the present work at institutions. <br/><br/>"Around the year 1900 there was a concern about the physical state of the people of Britain. Even though there had been tremendous efforts in the late 19th century to provide better public health housing and education many children were still no more healthy than they had been back in the 1840s. The new Liberal government elected in 1906 passed various measures to try to deal with this problem.and they gave permission for schools to offer meals to their pupils" National Archives. Efforts to consider the link between education and nutrition had begun in the lead-up to the laws however; and the present work is a scarce surviving example of such a cookery. Its compilers note in the preface "This collection of Recipes has been prepared specially for Day and Evening Schools. The instructions of the Education Department.have been embodied." Given the book's brevity it contains a multitude of basic nutritious and locally accessible foods that can be combined for a variety of different meals -- always with an eye to giving growing students the fuel they need to grow and thrive in their schooldays. 1959List920New York: NAACP 1959. Poster on heavy card stock 13 x 10 inches. Some foxing to edges near fine condition overall. Near Fine. In 1959 to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education decision the NAACP coordinated a group of celebrations in churches throughout the country to celebrate Freedom Sunday. The effort led by Reverend Edward J. Odom Jr. the NAACP church Secretary involved over 100 local chapters across the country. The celebrations on May 17th were a part of a larger coordinated campaign by the NAACP to register voters raise funds and engage in desegregation projects. Coverage in the mainstream press was scant with several short articles on the celebrations appearing in a range of states including Michigan Alabama and Indiana. <br /> <br /> We find no other record of this poster promoting the event which was produced in New York and can't confirm whether it was distributed to local chapters. Overall a visually striking poster commemorating both the landmark court decision and the role that the church would play in the Civil Rights movement in general. NAACP unknown books

Some toning wear. Generally very good. <br/><br/>Archive a student who received his BS MA and PhD at Peabody as well as that of his wife who also graduated from Peabody with a BS. The couple were both heavily involved in the school members of numerous social organizations and active in student government he was president of the senior class of '26. The promotional material in the collection shows that the college which had reorganized and opened a new campus directly across from Vanderbilt University in 1914 was in the midst of major construction and expansion projects during this time; many pieces show photographs and renderings of new or planned buildings. The college at that time the largest teachers' college in the South was incorporated into Vanderbilt in 1979. Inserted material varies in size. <br/><br/>The graduation album of Voris Awilda Matheny documenting her senior year at West Durham High School in Durham North Carolina. Named the "Poetess" in the hand-written list of class officers Voris seems to have been well-liked and active in school life as well as the "star pupil" of at least one teacher who writes admiringly in the Faculty notes that Voris "had the perseverance genius and gift of poetry to write 'Lohengrin' in rhyme." She was also passionately involved in the debate team providing accounts of several debates the associate editor of the student newspaper the Clarion and the Chaplain of the Adelphian Literary Society. Voris later attended Duke University. The album includes printed sections for messages from faculty and classmates the class "yell" and motto photographs invitations programs sporting events "Spreads and Entertainments" "Music and Dramatics" "Fun and Frolics" including a program for the 1923 "West Durham School Minstrel" which featured "Coontown Thirteen Club Song Hits" ethnic dances such as the "Gypsy Tambourine Drill" and "Cotton Picking Dance" and concluded with a finale of "Old Zip Coon" social events etc. The "Class History" "Class Prophecy" and "Class Poem" were written by the students and provide insight into the composition of the class and via the "Class Prophecy" -- written by "Piggie" White in the form of a fictional 1935 newspaper about the students -- the student's notions about the lives ahead of them. Of particular note is a section of the Prophecy entitled "Women Invade Politics" in which Miss Minnie Holt is a lawyer who has never lost a case; Miss Rhoda Kelley is "the first woman president of the U.S." and who "never feels tremors on addressing Congress for she once debated at Chapel Hill"; and Miss Virgie Reese is a famed public speaker who stumped for Miss Kelley and is "rumored.to shortly use these unusual powers of speech to get herself at the head of the Klux-Klan." Pasted-in material includes printed programs student calling cards a leaf of the Clarion envelopes with manuscript letters and invitations folded inside assorted other notes and cards 4 small photographs of individual students botanical material napkins etc. Laid in are a wedding invitation a card containing manuscript debate notes and two letters sent to one Harry G. Rosenbluh from Julius Nelson regarding a "typewriting art" contest and including two sheets of sample designs; it is unclear what relation Mr. Rosenbluh or Mr. Nelson may have to Ms. Matheny if any. Ann Ullman Hirsch 1929 - 2017 had formal musical training and education at Juilliard and NYU; she was a passionate musician music educator and administrator. In a career spanning more than 60 years she was well known on Long Island for her extensive musical contributions including founding the Eastern Suffolk School of Music in Riverhead in 1977 and serving as its executive director for 10 years. Pianist and violinist she was a valued member of the L.I. Sound Symphony and was a private piano instructor to children and adults. Named East End Woman of Year in Education East End Magazine Suffolk County NY 1979 and honored by Peconic Bay Zonta at a Celebration of Women in 2013. from her obituary in 27 East and several online sources Collection includes: 1975 A 68-page typed manuscript with 2 annotated working draft copies of "A Basic Guide for the Teaching of Piano" by Ann U. Hirsch. These include tipped-on photographs of students' correct form along with the teaching exercises in the text & with extra image-sheets and 35mm photographic negatives laid-in. One of the drafts has extensive marginal notation. All are accomplished one-side either on quality typing bond paper of the time or copies. The original set is a group of loose sheets; working drafts are in 3-ring binders. Ms. Hirsch' introduction explains her purpose since according to her research - "There are also many fine books both long and short written by great pianists that suggest technical and artistic approaches for the advanced and professional performers but my purpose is hopefully to have written something for those who work primarily with beginners. I have tried to make it personal and informal while at the same time offer specific advice in the areas I consider most crucial. My hope is that if this book were to be published it could be made inexpensively in pocket book size and thus be available on counters in music stores as well as in colleges for all those who study piano and expect to teach it too" With 3 typed original letters from Ms. Hirsch to the music publishers Theodore Presser Co. Sterling Publishing Co. and Prentis Hall Publications all describing the content and asking in similar fashion to consider her book for publication. Included here are these three publishers' rejection-replies & another letter from Dover publishing which also rejected her project for various reasons. There is also a handwritten request from Ms. Hirsch soliciting the opinion of a professional editor-writer whom she thought may be able to help put her book into proper form for publication. A run of 26 piano recital programs given in 1987 - 2013 by the students of Ann U. Hirsch; given in various private homes on Long Island. Most approx. 7" x 8 ½" size; single folded sheets with four printed sides. 1980-1984 Approx. 30 one or two page programs for the ESSM concerts student recitals often given monthly and a few other miscellaneous programs sponsored by ESSM in the Riverhead NY area: Jazz concerts percussion events concerts by faculty & guests student presentations. With personnel players pieces performed. 1986 A file folder with approx. 30 typed pages of material some on ESSM letterhead. These papers recount the struggle apparently of several months duration of the music school's attempts to restructure the board of directors and executive functions find adequate and sustainable financing and address critical accounting insurance liability and staffing issues which threatened the institution's continued existence. Some of the letters reveal troubling circumstances and finally include the resignation of Ms. Hirsch as the school's executive director and her choice of ceasing any further activities associated with the school including teaching. Other letters document and list various complaints needed changes salary & staffing requirements involving Ms. Hirsch board members and others who were involved in the running of the school. Miscellaneous: A three-ring binder with thumb-guide sections with some dozens of pages; this was Ms. Hirsch' own personal teaching and performance log: Students; Billing; Music; Musicians & Schedule. These sections have handwritten entries lists of student names addresses phone numbers; billing schedule and names columned with payments & various billing tiers. The "Music" section gives student names pieces planning for programs teaching notes; "Musicians" section with names phone numbers musical instruments & often the location of a large group of varied musical talents. With a variety of paper ephemera in a back pocket: newspaper clippings regarding music; MS performance names locations; schedules including for fees; TLS with her teaching offerings; name lists receipts. Arthurdale West Virginia was the first New Deal planned resettlement community. Eleanor Roosevelt took a leading role in the establishment of Arthurdale and it was one of her major priorities. The New Deal administration built houses schools and public buildings in the community and helped organize educational actives for the resettled coal miners in this back-to-the-land and self-sufficiency effort. The federal government liquidated its holdings in Arthurdale in 1947 and private ownership replaced it. It now exists as a historic site. West Virginia University paperback books

Containing approximately 90 black and white photographic images of varying sizes; from 1 1/4" square to 3 ½" x 5 ½" postcard size; most of them average about 2 ½" x 3 ½." Mostly these are candid photographs of the life of young boys and men in Austria and Germany with internal dating on some of the photographs of 1929 to 1935 and additional place and dating information on some. There are photos of children mostly young boys at class and later as young men on class trips hiking cycling; with adult chaperones; for the older boys the educational duties appear to be supervised by Christian religious male instructors only. Also containing a few group photographs of men students priests; and some church interior views. Some of the images have the photography studio rubber stamps on the reverse of the state pharmacy in Rottweil. Five of the images are commercial images of architectural landmarks in Vienna. The photographs are corner-mounted not glued into two hardcover albums with black paper pages side-string tied. One album measures 6" x 8 ¼" and the other 7 ½" x 10 ½" approx. size; both albums with art-deco themed cloth covers.
