Publisher from page i and date of publication from page ii. ~ Second printing. Now with changes in pagination; the "Consent to Print" is on the verso of the title page and the rear contains an order form and advertisements for additional items for sale. The artwork also drawn by "R. Seetomona" depicts the same image of a young woman sitting near a stove but the stylized lettering with title letters formed from images of fish or seal drying on a line is clearer and a bit more complex the young woman's haircut is longer and parted in the middle and the pot on the stove has five heat lines instead of six. All other issues of this work we have examined have had this artwork and have been printed in black on colored wrappers. And all other issues contain an order form in various configurations as well as lists of other items for sale. ~ Eighty attributed recipes gathered from Inupiaq students participating in a school project and electing "to share the profits with the Alaska Crippled Children's Association" page ii. In some cases latitude is required to explain the lack of detail in recipes contributed by children for example: "Owl. Take feathers off from owl. Clean owl and put in cooking pot. Have lots of water in pot. Add salt to taste." But in other cases details are generously given as in the caution provided for Willow Meats with seal oil: "Never eat green stuff on willows" and in another when preparing mouseleaves Pick'Nick: "Maybe the white men don't like them." Other delicacies: Mazue Root Eskimo potato Eskimo Ice cream with reindeer tallow Baked Seal Liver Walrus Stew Oogruk i.e. bearded seal Intestine Soup and Seal Flippers. A cooperative venture between the public Day School in Shishmaref in the far north-on Sarichef Island north of the Bering Strait-and the Alaska Crippled Children's Association founded by a women's organization in Anchorage to fund orthopedic care for some twelve hundred children in Alaska then in dire need. Isabelle B. Bingham b. 1900 and her husband Herbert C. Bingham 1893-1965 were Alaska Native Service schoolteachers who taught in Shishmaref between 1948 and 1956. In 2002 fearing that life would no longer be possible on Sarichef owing to the effects of global climate change the inhabitants of Shishmaref voted in referendum to relocate. But moving a village of five hundred has proved daunting and most residents as well as the school remain on the island as of this writing. Octavo paperbound stapled printed wrappers 8 pp. Very Good with foxing age darkened spotting and shadowed edges. Program for Vineland Day has had its upper cover signed by both James A. Michener and Pearl S. Buck. As noted on underside of upper cover: We are fotunate to again have with us on Vineland Day the distinguished President of the Board of Trustees of the AMerican Institute for Mental Studies Pearl S. Buck. She has long been active in work for retarded children. In 1950 she published a small book entitled The Child Who Never Grew -- the story of her own experience with her eldest daughter whose mental growth was retarded. This was written first as an article for the Ladies Home Journal to help parents of other retarded cihldren. It was reprinted in the Reader’s Digest and was subsequently published in more than a dozen languages. This personal narrative has done much to educate the public in the cause of the mentally handicapped. And later in the publication: Today’s Guest of Honor and featured speaker is a person whose talents reflect a great love and understanding of his fellow man. His reputation as a celebrated Pulitzer prize winning author is universally recognized. His deep concern for those deprived in any respect is known as well. A teacher author historian world traveler and humanitarian Mr. Michener attributes his greatest motivation to his boyhood years in Bucks County Pennsylvania. No matter how far his travels have taken him he still refers to this picturesque Quaker setting as “Home Country†and resides there presently. Mr. Michener’s literary works include Sayonara The Bridge at Toko-Ri Hawaii The Source and others. His Return to Paradise was the basis for the long running TV series Adventures in Paradise. Perhaps his best known book is Tales of the South Pacific which was transformed into one of the greatest Broadway musicals ever produced. Mr. Michener’s latest effort Iberia was released by Random House earlier this month. His writings reflect his great perceptiveness which is never obscured by the culture that provides the background for his stories. Identifications handwritten in white ink on the album leaves most of which has worn away. 96 of the photos are mounted 4 to a page loosely inserted in their 'window' mounts; the balance are loosely laid-in. Images about 2 3/4" x 4 1/2" and portray the daily activities of the female school attendees including boating trips on the Hudson gym and outdoor antics school events - communion ceremonies"Turkish" wedding costume party the architecture of the school including new buildings being added to the venue. 1930WRCAM52672Paradise Valley Az 1930. 220 silver gelatin photographs most 2 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches to 3 1/4 x 5 3/4 inches with a handful of larger photographs and some smaller-format panoramas. Oblong folio. Original brad-bound album. Minor dust-soiling. Overall very good. An engaging collection of original photographs from Arizona circa 1930. The album would seem to depict the early days of the Judson School a well-known boarding school which opened in Paradise Valley Arizona in 1928. It was evidently assembled by one of the students. The first photograph shows the student body of nineteen young men in coat and tie; the second shows founder and head George Judson and the three men who evidently constituted the whole faculty at the time. Since one of the photographs contains a joking reference to Prohibition it would seem to date before 1933; at the same time there are enough buildings and structures to suggest the school had been going for several years hence our dating to circa 1930. <br> <br> The school prided itself on offering a vigorous outdoor life as well as regular schooling. The students are shown in various settings: tending to a camp surveying or on horseback in the desert a few shots depicting a snow-covered desert. The young men are also depicted at leisure: reading in chairs indoors and outdoors playing baseball and tennis wrestling and roping. Also present are a good number of photographs depicting the landscape around the area captured while the boys were exploring the areas around Paradise Valley and Phoenix with numerous shots of the men preparing food while out on the desert prairies. Five photographs depict a railroad derailment and a handful capture Spanish-style buildings or Native American structures in the area with one image of a Native American family inside a makeshift tent. There is also a group of photographs in an eastern setting presumably the student back home. <br> <br> The Judson School once in a rural desert setting was eventually surrounded by the explosive growth of Phoenix. The owner of the school which was always a private for- profit endeavor sold the land to luxury real estate developers and closed the school in 2000. <br> <br> A wonderful collection of photographs depicting a famous pioneering school in Arizona. unknown books

This sammelband contains five items with no proper title page or index. It is a fascinating variety of material that was used for training in the Barrage Balloon School Camp Tyson Tennessee for WWII. <br/><br/>The first item contains 87 leaves plus two indices detailing ground and air based targets likely to be seen by Balloon operators. This item is maddeningly bound out of order with the indices thrown in haphazardly. Part I contains 30 leaves of ground based targets with everything from a British Infantry Tank MK III "Valentine" to the Panzerfampfwagon III a German medium tank to scout cars howitzer and armored cars. Part II contains 57 leaves identifying various aircraft. The index for this part notes this is part of a "Target Recognition Instructors Course" and lists sixty aircraft. We have not taken the time to sort out if the indices are representative of the contents but spot checks conclude a likely correlation. Each leaf contains one or two pages of commentary on the target how to identify it it's characteristics and sometimes conversational assessments of its usefulness.<br/><br/>Item two in this sammelband is titled "Rigging and Fabric Repair Revised Edition" prepared by Clarence Vladimir Capt. C. A. C. Senior Instructor. Apparently created by the Division of Enlisted Specialists Barrage Balloon School Camp David N. C. 2 63 pages plus one plate it is densely written with illustrations throughout. Much on knot construction.<br/><br/>Item three is "Rigging and Fabric Repair Barrage Ballooon Training Center 1941" 2 16 pages plus one plate and six figures plus definitions. A presumably earlier version of Item two above with less space given over to illustrations.<br/><br/>Item four is "Synopsis of Charts Logs Maps Reports" 6 pages dated on page six 9-19-41 with some hand annotations/additions. Penciled is "D. E. Aldrich 1st Lt" on first page.<br/><br/>Item five is an extensive 24 page Gossary of Barrage Balloon Terms.<br/><br/>We were unable to find any of these items listed in OCLC/Worldcat as of this writing. It may be of interest to note that the single full-page advertisment page 64 is for the recently introduced KitchenAid model H-5 of 1922 the first of its kind marketed directly to home cooks. Calvary Baptist Church emerged during the American Civil War establishing itself in the center of Washington in 1862. It was the locus of the forge for the Northern Baptist Convention in 1907 and calls itself still "the founding church of the American Baptist Convention." Education has been chief among its missions. The origin of the Gardez Class name is not explained but its membership - the 1924 roster appears on page 3 - was exclusively female. It is hard to resist speculation that the name derives from a famous nineteenth-century parable chronicling the life and moral temptations of a young working woman called The Factory Girl or Gardez la Coeur. The fate of the novel's author a surgeon with the 42nd Massachusetts Regiment who had perished at his post in 1863 would surely have resonated with a church whose founding had been so entwined with the Civil War and the Proclamation on 1 January of that year. Bound in gray wrappers splatter stained with blue lettering and images of three steaming soup bowls; bottom corner of front panel chipped; front hinge started.
