Established in 1965 as a reaction to traditional academia FUNY was in the tradition of 1960s protest movements run by committee with open enrollment and granting no degrees. This catalog which lists the school's 24 class offerings demonstrates a focus on the humanities with courses in filmmaking history fine arts and drama. Class offerings were predictably left-leaning with titles like "A Quest for Self" "The Thought of Mao Tse-Tung" and "Black Power and the "Ghetto Uprisings" and the faculty included counterculture figures such as Ed Sanders and Tuli Kupferberg. An ambitious and ephemeral offshoot of the 1960s counterculture movement FUNY closed after only a few years in operation. Free School of New York paperback books

Haven in 1929. 90 pages of notes mostly mechanically reproduced plus blueprints and diagrams throughout. Also included is a Lowell Technical Institute Examination in the front apparently a test given at that institution for Building Construction: Examination in Building Construction 1933. In the rear of the binder is section "Description of Chimneys Massachusetts Institute of Technology 1931" which contains engineering notes on various chimneys in the area The Merrimack Manufacturing Company's Chimney The Pacific Mills Chimney etc etc.<br/><br/>George B. For relief from pineapple there is Washington City's Favorite Salad with macaroni celery and ham. For luncheon: Maple Tea Cakes Virginia Walnut Cakes Date Cakes Christmas Cakes for those recovered: Pineapple Filling. It may be of interest to note that the single full-page advertisment page 64 is for the recently introduced KitchenAid model H-5 of 1922 the first of its kind marketed directly to home cooks. Calvary Baptist Church emerged during the American Civil War establishing itself in the center of Washington in 1862. It was the locus of the forge for the Northern Baptist Convention in 1907 and calls itself still "the founding church of the American Baptist Convention." Education has been chief among its missions. The origin of the Gardez Class name is not explained but its membership - the 1924 roster appears on page 3 - was exclusively female. It is hard to resist speculation that the name derives from a famous nineteenth-century parable chronicling the life and moral temptations of a young working woman called The Factory Girl or Gardez la Coeur. The fate of the novel's author a surgeon with the 42nd Massachusetts Regiment who had perished at his post in 1863 would surely have resonated with a church whose founding had been so entwined with the Civil War and the Proclamation on 1 January of that year. Bound in gray wrappers splatter stained with blue lettering and images of three steaming soup bowls; bottom corner of front panel chipped; front hinge started. 1951734561951. Paperback. Good. All appear to be written in 1951 and all were sent to Rev. Campbell MacRae Lewistall who is identified on a slip laid in one of the envelopes as Founder-teacher Blyden-Lewistall Private School at 314 West 133rd Street in New York City. Some letters are worn; all appear to be complete. Most envelopes present some with stamps. Three of the letters were from Philip Nathaniel King headmaster or head teacher of this Methodist-supported elementary school; one is from his wife; two are from his son; and two are from Mr. King's niece who was also a teacher at the school. All of the letters seem designed to establish contact with Rev. Lewistall who is addressed as Uncle. Some including the letters from King's son thank the New York Uncle for gifts such as an air rifle. It is clear from the letters that conditions at the school were far from ideal and that the Kings were hoping that their uncle in America would provide some financial support. <br/><br/> paperback books

19342256New York: The Workers School 1934. <br /><br />Octavo-sized pamphlet measuring 8 7/8 x 6 inches 225 x 152 mm 16 pages in stapled printed wrappers. Laid in is a slightly smaller handbill printed recto only. <br /><br />A pamphlet listing courses available during the Fall 1934 term at the Workers School in New York which was operated by the Communist Party USA. The school offered a staggering number of evening courses in various aspects of Marxism-Leninism economics and history all from the Party's standpoint. The school located at 35 East 12th Street in Manhattan was one of many Workers Schools that the Party operated around the country. That building now consists of co-op apartments that sell for millions of dollars unaffordable by any proletarians. <br /><br />There were also courses in English and Russian along with "special courses" such as "Problems of the Negro Liberation Movement" taught by James W. Ford the CPUSA's candidate for Vice President in the three elections from 1932-1940. Another special course was "Revolutionary Interpretation of Modern Literature" taught by staff members of New Masses magazine including Mike Gold and Joseph Freeman. <br /><br />Tuition for each course was $3. The school emphasized that it wasn't an academic institution and that it "participates in all the current struggles of the working class" including strikes and demonstrations. Nonetheless it was clearly no-nonsense. In a section on attendance the pamphlet states: "Classes begin promptly at the hour set. Regular and punctual attendance is required. Failure to attend two weeks in succession without explanation will necessitate elimination of the student from the rolls." <br /><br />Included with this pamphlet is a handbill for the Workers School highlighting "Courses for Workers." One of the lecturers listed is "Browder" referring to Earl Browder the general secretary of the CPUSA. <br /><br />This pamphlet and handbill are rare. OCLC shows no institutional holdings although it's possible they're included in uncatalogued ephemera collections.<b> RARE</b>. <br /><br />A fascinating insight into Communist education during the Depression years of the 1930s. <br /><br />CONDITION: The pamphlet has some soiling and edge wear to the wrappers as well as rusted staples. Top half of lower wrapper detached from text block. Internally clean and unmarked. The handbill has numerous small nicks and tears. About Very Good overall. The Workers School paperback books

This sammelband contains five items with no proper title page or index. It is a fascinating variety of material that was used for training in the Barrage Balloon School Camp Tyson Tennessee for WWII. <br/><br/>The first item contains 87 leaves plus two indices detailing ground and air based targets likely to be seen by Balloon operators. This item is maddeningly bound out of order with the indices thrown in haphazardly. Part I contains 30 leaves of ground based targets with everything from a British Infantry Tank MK III "Valentine" to the Panzerfampfwagon III a German medium tank to scout cars howitzer and armored cars. Part II contains 57 leaves identifying various aircraft. The index for this part notes this is part of a "Target Recognition Instructors Course" and lists sixty aircraft. We have not taken the time to sort out if the indices are representative of the contents but spot checks conclude a likely correlation. Each leaf contains one or two pages of commentary on the target how to identify it it's characteristics and sometimes conversational assessments of its usefulness.<br/><br/>Item two in this sammelband is titled "Rigging and Fabric Repair Revised Edition" prepared by Clarence Vladimir Capt. C. A. C. Senior Instructor. Apparently created by the Division of Enlisted Specialists Barrage Balloon School Camp David N. C. 2 63 pages plus one plate it is densely written with illustrations throughout. Much on knot construction.<br/><br/>Item three is "Rigging and Fabric Repair Barrage Ballooon Training Center 1941" 2 16 pages plus one plate and six figures plus definitions. A presumably earlier version of Item two above with less space given over to illustrations.<br/><br/>Item four is "Synopsis of Charts Logs Maps Reports" 6 pages dated on page six 9-19-41 with some hand annotations/additions. Penciled is "D. E. Aldrich 1st Lt" on first page.<br/><br/>Item five is an extensive 24 page Gossary of Barrage Balloon Terms.<br/><br/>We were unable to find any of these items listed in OCLC/Worldcat as of this writing.
