The idea was launched by Frank Buchman head of the spiritual movement Moral Re-Armament originally called the Oxford Group and today known as Initiatives of Change. Buchman's idea according to the preface was for Freedom to rouse the conscience of the world as Uncle Tom's Cabin had done in the United States to help bring freedom to all men.
