The report reconstructs the origin and spread of plague cases in Port Louis and other districts presents case and mortality statistics in tabular form and describes measures adopted by the colonial authorities including isolation quarantine rat-destruction campaigns vaccination the destruction of infected dwellings and sanitary reforms in insanitary urban quarters. Issued in the context of the wider “third pandemic” of bubonic plague it offers a detailed picture of epidemic management in a small Indian Ocean colony and of the impact of plague control on urban space and labouring and immigrant populations. The Mauritius outbreak – particularly in Port Louis – attracted international medical and press attention and has since been treated in the historiography as a classic case of colonial plague control in a port city.
