A memoir of the author's life while he was researching and writing a religious history called Les Martyrs ou le Triomphe de la Religion Chretienne. The introduction includes the history of Athens and Sparta and an inquiry into religious traditions related to Jerusalem-specifically the authenticity of claims made by religious tourists such as visiting the actual tomb of Christ. The text of the diary is full of literary references and adventure. Unlike other travel diaries the narrative flow is more like a novel and the entries are not just lists of weather reports food pretty sights and some funny anecdotes. Since the author had a research purpose during his time there Travels in Greece has a protagonist with a purpose. <br /><br />1814 Good Ex-Lib copy considering almost 200 YEARS OLD 1814. Pages & maps are not torn aside from library markings the text & pages are VERY GOOD. 471 pp. 46 pp. Appendix. Rebound to burnt orange in 1953 by library w/gold gilt lettering on spine. Embellished w/a map and 3 copper & 4 wood engravings. Light bumping on corners yellowing edges & page foxing. There are signs of visible wear which may include markings bookplate or authors name bumping small tears non-major spine or binding defects but book is still wholly intact. As first principal he chose the faculty began recruiting students and planned the curriculum for the normal school. He started the model training school in 1890. Edges of title page are age-toned. Book plate re-mounted on inside front cover belonging to Clements C. Fry M.D. 1892-1955 Professor of Psychiatry at Yale and a well known collector of medical prints. Bound in full modern calf done after an early style. Old spine label is preserved. John Haslam 1764-1844 was an Apothecary or Medical Officer at Bethlem Hospital Bedlam and afterwards the Governor of St. Luke's Hospital. Haslam was one of the most knowledgeable practitioners in his field. However according to Hunter and Macaplpine his attitudes toward patients were rather "harsh and unfeeling." In 1816 scandals arose over poor patient care at Bethlem Hospital and Haslam was dismissed from his position perhaps unfairly. The "Observations on Madness" was first published in 1798. Haslam however considered the second edition with its many additions to be his magnum opus. It remained the standard work for a number of years. Hunter and Macalpine pp. 632-39. <br/> <br/> J.
