Still serviceable hardcover. ; INSCRIBED by compiler Henri Pène du Bois to his parents on front free endpaper: "A mes chers père et mère Leur fils dévoué Henri Pène du Bois 10 Dec 92." Delightful anthology of maxims. "There are no anonymous maxims in this compilation of maxims expressly called phrases. They are phrases witty wicked and wise; are there any that deserve on of these qualifications and not on or both of the others Who shall make the classification agreeable to anybody but himself Yet there are the names of the authors to aid one; for some are names of deliberate wits. But it is not enough to know them; the state of mind of them at the time of their utterances should be divined. There are moments when deliberate wits have a heart I think. . There are in this book thoughts of men of genius and thoughts of simious comedians. If they were not all signed they could not be easily distinguished." - Preface. ; 162 pages; Signed by Author .
