1873249039Paris: Henri Charpentier Editeur 1873. Hardcover. viii 86p. twenty fullpage litho'd plates complete run in good shape intact also as to text. Hardbound folio in 19.2x13 inch red cloth boards gilt shows signs of a long-ago restoration to spine: relatively new red cloth smooth shows beneath the original red cloth textured along both joints and the head head rim is entirely a restoration with a bit more showing at tail rim. Boards are very edgeworn and somewhat grimy from handling and age. Cormer-tips show a lot of card. Hinges and endsheets original yellow stock are surprisingly good the textblock is a little loose at some gutters but is fundamentally intact. Laid down on the back of the frontispiece is a very old seller's note in French 5x4 inches about 50 words of description. One plate is loose with slight edgewear to margins. The textpaper stock is acidic toned and feels fragile though looks okay. Plates are vivid; nine or so show burning buildings and the colors are red and orange on black. Ten plates are b&w on pale tint-blocks; and one of the Exposition Universelle 1867 is a vast aerial panorama with some green and other tints. All litho'd colors and hand-work are applied expertly nothing garish nothing out of register. A fair-to-good copy of the book in toto without major flaws with all plates without exception good.
