Signed on the title page by John Stephen Vaughan 1853-1925 the English Catholic bishop of Sebastopolis and later of Salford. Vaughan was the brother of Herbert Vaughan who was also a Catholic bishop. John Stephen Vaughan was also a mathematics professor for a brief period at St. Bede's College after which he did missionary work in Australia. This booklet addresses the political threats facing Pope Pius IX in Italy at the time of publication and how those threats affected the entire Church. Bede was the Archbishop of Sydney. Edward F. Bookplates state "from the estate of William P. Sheffield." Sheffield an attorney from Block Island R.I. served in the State and Federal Houses of Representatives and filled a term in the U.S. Senate in 1884-85. 437 395 pp. 8vo. Navy marbled boards backed with navy leather spines. Four raised bands to spines gold embossed titles and decorative insets. Spines are a bit worn at ends - Volume II a bit more than Volume I. All corners are rubbed revealing board underneath edges have some rubbing. Marble-patterned endpapers with each volume sporting an armorial bookplate on front pastedown. There are a few penciled notations on first fly. Both volumes are tight with occasional foxing and some light soil. A rare set of historically important books. Text in French. A popular Victorian literary character was Mr. Verdant Green an Oxford Freshman hero of several books written and illustrated by a Midland vicar Rev. Edward Bradley 1827-1889 under the pen-name of Cuthbert Bede. Bradley had learned wood-engraving from no less than George Cruikshank but as Houfe notes "remained very much the amateur illustrating his own books.and others in a jolly and careless style." He also drew for Punch and "was one of the first illustrators to satirise photography."<br/><br/>This drawing jolly and careless shows two sketches of the hapless freshman unsuccessfully defending a wicket--the drawings appear in more finished wood-engraved form on pages 100-101 of The Adventures of Mr. Verdant Green-- and a more formal portrait done in the year in which The Adventures first appeared thus making it an Oxford literary and cricket item all in one.
