First published in three volumes between 1774-1781 this work is generally regarded as being the first narrative English literary history.Written by Thomas Warton 1728-1790 an English literary historian also remembered for being Poet Laureate appointed in 1792. This was his most important and best-known work and in its first edition only covered until the sixteenth century.Complete in six volumes. With an illustrated frontispiece of the author.Containing the bookplate of John Cann Bailey 1864-1931 a literary critic and chairman of the National Trust. His works include 'The Claims of French Poetry' 'Poets and Poetry' and 'An Anthology of English Elegies'.With charming gilt detail to the spines and an armorial stamp to the covers. In a full calf binding. Externally a trifle rubbed to the spines in particular to the tail of volumes I and III; volume I is cracked along the front joint. Ownership bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. Internally generally firmly bound; the front hinges of volume I II is cracked but remaining firm. Signed on the title page by John Stephen Vaughan 1853-1925 the English Catholic bishop of Sebastopolis and later of Salford. Vaughan was the brother of Herbert Vaughan who was also a Catholic bishop. John Stephen Vaughan was also a mathematics professor for a brief period at St. Bede's College after which he did missionary work in Australia. This booklet addresses the political threats facing Pope Pius IX in Italy at the time of publication and how those threats affected the entire Church. Bede was the Archbishop of Sydney. Edward F. 1884100175<p>April 1884. 1884. Very good. - Over 52 words penned on 7-1/2 inch high by 5-1/8 inch wide "The Lotos Club" stationery. Writing from New York Howard Paul asks "Wallis" if he heard from Wyndham "I have delayed my departure and do not return to England until the 17th of Nov." He goes on to say "I hoped to meet you at the Lotos-Irving dinner last night". Signed "Howard Paul". There is a stain to the bottom left corner of the verso. Once likely mounted in an album there are gray paper remnants adhering to the right edge of the verso. Very good.</p><p>The Lotos-Irving dinner with Henry Irving was held on April 27 1884.</p><p>The American writer playwright comic actor and theatrical manager Henry Howard Paul 1830-1905 spent most of his life in the United Kingdom. He first worked in London as a journalist and published "Diaries of American Humor or Yankee Stories" in serialized form with illustrations by John Leech and wrote the comic play "Diogenes". He married the British singer and actress Isabella Hill with whom he frequently performed as Howard Paul and Mrs. Howard Paul. The actress Letty Lind was their protegee from the age of 10 and Paul later had an affair with her which led to his divorce. After Letty Lind left Paul he married Florence Kate Arthur and in his later years became a theatre manager and returned to journalism.</p> [April], [1884].

Very good. - Sepia-toned cabinet photograph by Conly 5-1/2 inches high by 3-7/8 inches wide mounted on a card 6-1/2 inches high by 4-1/4 inches wide with the cast and credits of "Prince Kam; or A Trip to Venus" printed on the verso Signed "Sincerely yours / Camille D'Arville" below the photo. There is some very light foxing & soiling to the verso. Very good. <p>The copy on the verso of the photograph states that this card is a souvenir of the 75th performance at the Park Theatre Boston of Rice's comic opera 'Venus' with libretto by Charles Alfred Byrne and Louis Harrison and music by Gustave Kerker. As the star Camille D'Arville is listed separately at the foot of the cast list. She plays Prince Kam son and heir of Poom the Grand Llama of Thibet. The photo is a head-and-shoulders portrait of a distinctly womanly D'Arville wearing an embroidered cap on her mop of short curly hair and a doublet with puffed sleeves elaborately jeweled around the collar.<p>Born Neeltye Dykstra in the Netherlands Camille D'Arville studied music in Amsterdam and made her debut there in concert in 1877. She appeared in London toured the English provinces and came to the United States in 1888 under the management of J. F. Duff.<p>The photographer Charles F.
