Wrappers clean and bright with a few small circular stains and light soiling minor corner wear and short splits at spine ends; spine lightly rubbed but legible; interior lightly age-toned at edges and otherwise clean and sound; overall good condition. Issued during a period when medical professionals increasingly analyzed and categorized alternative social arrangements through clinical frameworks this issue provides direct evidence of how nineteenth-century gynecology engaged with experimental communities offering value for the study of women's health reproductive history and the medical interpretation of social reform movements. unknown

Octavo ca. 22cm.; stitched self-wrappers; 19pp. Wrappers a bit chipped and soiled spine mostly perished long closed tear to upper cover touching text without loss; Good only overall. Deathbed missive by the Scottish obstetrician in response to American physician Jacob Bigelow's "gratuitous attack upon me" p. 1. Bigelow had gained notoriety for his attack on the medical profession's reliance on certain drugs while Simpson was the first physician to use chloroform as an anaesthetic. From the note from the editors dated April 28 1870: "The appended letter was received after the May number of the Journal had gone to press.Dr. S. lies very ill possibly never to recover and the letter was written by dictation. Under these circumstances it will be read with the more interest and will be found a bitter pill to swallow though an effective one by the gentleman to whom it is addressed." Indeed Simpson succombed to his illness on May 6 of that year. OCLC locates four separately catalogued copies as of March 2020 at Yale Harvard the NLM and Duke. Plate volume only without the text as frequently. <br/> Modern half cinnabar buckram over marbled boards smooth spine with black morocco label. Original paper covers bound in at front and back. WITH 81 SOMETIMES MEMORABLE ANATOMICAL PLATES engraved by Forestier and Couché fils after drawings by Antoine Chazal. Corners a bit bumped title page and first plate a bit foxed just a hint of foxing elsewhere otherwise quite fine--the plates clean fresh and bright and the binding showing little significant wear.<br/> <br/> Engraved to accompany a treatise on pregnancy and childbirth by the most eminent French obstetrician of the time the engravings here in Waller's words are "splendid" and "executed with the utmost accuracy." "Heirs of Hippocrates" observes that these plates "cover virtually every phase of childbirth including pelvic deformities pelvimetry transverse presentations Caesarean section the use of forceps and even a section on infant feeding and lactation." There is also a demure depiction of a doctor's discreet "touch only" examination of a standing clothed woman which is surely one of the most memorable images in the literature. Considered one of the best men in his field Jacques-Pierre Maygrier 1771-1835 studied with Ambrose du Bois the doctor who attended Empress Marie Louise at the birth of Napoleon's son and heir. In addition to practicing at Cochin hospital and the Hotel-Dieu Maygrier taught courses in anatomy and physiology and succeeded Jean-Louis Baudelocque as Chair of the department of obstetrics at the Maternité de Port Royal the first specialized medical chair in France. The illustrations here are the work of Antoine Chazal 1793-1854 best known for his botanical paintings but also a renowned anatomical engraver illustrating works that included Cruveilhier's classic "Anatomie Pathologique du Corps Humain." The images here are much more artful than technical with an appropriate softness and sympathy that encourage a strong connection between the viewer and the mothers and children who are sometimes depicted in intimate settings. Extremely rare and only a couple of copies extant of most of the pieces Stanford University and University of Edinburgh of these historical and practical collection of essays on gynecology or obstetrics. Several are the among the first English translations of these medical classics: Heinrich Johann Nepomuk von Crantz Charles Henry Dzondi William Harvey and Hermann Franz Naegele. Probably all of them were produced by the publisher William Irwin of Manchester for what was called "Scarce and valuable monographs" which were numbered. These 14 essays are all published by Irwin and issued in either 1848 or 1849. PROVENANCE: Dr. George Cobban Garmouth Fochabers Elgin took his medical degree from the University of Edinburgh 1851 served as Assistant Curator of the Anatomical Museum Edinburgh Univ. etc. See: Medical Directory for Scotland 1853 – James McGrigor Maclagan M.D. 1830-1892 one of the sons of prominent Scottish Dr. David Maclagan 1785-1865 who served in the Napoleonic wars and was President of both the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He served as Surgeon in Scotland to Queen Victoria. "David's youngest son James attended Edinburgh's Royal High School and University graduating MD in 1851 with a thesis on autumn crocus the source of colchicine for gout. He served in the Indian Army as an Assistant Surgeon but ill health the details of which are not recorded cut short his service. James then engaged in private practice in Cromer and Mexborough before moving into public health serving as medical officer for health for Hexham and Haltwhistle until 1890. His resignation was precipitated by a reduction in his salary from £300 to £200 per year and the suggestion that he augment this with private practice something he felt unqualified to do after so many years away from the bedside. It was as he was leaving the meeting where all of this was discussed that he fell breaking his femur. It healed but left him with a limp and much impaired health. Although he was never as well-known as his father and brothers James held many positions in the British Medical Association and the Northern Counties Association of Medical Officers of Health and was considered an authority on water supply housing and sanitation as adjudged by his 17 annual reports. Curiously his death was recorded as being caused by 'chronic cerebritis supervening on an attack of hemiplegia'." – D.
