70603The personal photographic album of Eppes Bartow Hawes Williams 1902-81 a St. Louis debutante and U.S. Senator's daughter who married five times and traveled annually to Europe. The album dates from the mid 1930s and contains more than 100 photographs including original photos of Gertrude Stein and the French artist Bernard Boutet de Monvel aboard ship. The first image in the album is a magazine clipping from the wedding of Laura and Peter Bostwick in 1933 at which Eppes nee Mrs. Lewis T. Preston served as matron of honor. Bostwick the grandson of Standard Oil founder Jabez A. Bostwick was a sportsman and one of the leading steeplechase owners. Eppes' father was Senator Harry Bartow. She graduated from Maryville College in Missouri and was presented to Society first in St. Louis and then in Washington D.C. and New York. As a young girl she was noted for her athletic ability and qualified for the Olympics as a high board diver. The photographs some which are briefly captioned in pencil or ink show Eppes and her friends at the beach playing tennis and socializing. A few images in the album are captioned "polo Aiken" and "Gold Cup races" presumably referring to steeplechase races in Virginia. It appears this album dates from 1933-35 as clippings in the album refer to her as Mrs. Preston; however many original photographs show her with Lloyd Moore her second of five husbands whom she married in 1935. Her first husband was Lewis Thompson Preston CEO of JP Morgan and eighth president of the World Bank Group. On May 11 1935 Eppes and Moore who were not yet married sailed from New York to England aboard the SS Champlain a cabin class ocean liner. Among the passengers was the French artist Bernard Boutet de Monvel who posed for a photograph with Eppes. The album also contains two photographs of Gertrude Stein standing on the ship's deck. For Stein this voyage was her return trip home to Paris. In October 1934 Stein arrived in America after a 30-year absence for an exhausting six-month tour that transformed her from a noteworthy but little known author into a national celebrity. The photographs are pasted to the stiff album pages only half the album is used which are bound in an oblong brown leather album with gilt stamping. Though both joints are cracked the binding remains sound. unknown books

2011263455Spoleto: Archivio Fotografico 2011. Two related items in a clever slipcase cum snap-closer box: largely captioned portrait and group photography b&w only in the Gian Carlo Menotti honor-fest vivid color in book devoted to Carla Fendi. Neither volume paginated Fendi's is lengthy and bound in laminated colorphoto boards the Menotti in openweave black cloth and dust jacket and much shorter. Item shows very classy upper-class doings the men in formal attire the women quite variously dressed there are g-strings for burly-que fun. Readers musically in tune will recognize many faces here this cataloguer was merely Oooo! Pavarotti! Both Menotti and Fendi make people open up; he for example is the only party host who ever publicly drew out Jackie Onassis' reserve; his congrats to her on RFK's win in the 1968 CA primary was met with her flairing "Why they will just kill him like they killed my husband" a remark that made European media but not here. A neat collection of just under thirty real photo postcards of Texas scenes most showing military or oil business scenes. Approximately half are filled out by a man named George and addressed to a female acquaintance or relative in Woodbine Iowa from 1918 to 1920. George seems to have been in the military as several of the completed postcards are written from Ft. Ringgold in Rio Grande City Ft. Sam Houston and Wichita Falls. The locales depicted in the cards correspond to the regions surrounding these base points and include images of Burkburnett Ranger Breckenridge Mission McAllen Brownsville and several other towns. The cards showing the oil fields of North Texas and related operations and infrastructure are quite striking. unknown books

16845Rural Schools Photo album from a teacher working in 1920s in several rural Midwestern America including Michigan Schools. 124 original silver gelatin print photographs detailing the lives of teachers students and community members around the one-room schools that served small farming communities. 124 black and white silver gelatin print photos various sizes from 2.5 x 1.5 in. to 4.5 x 6.5 in. Photos date from 1922-1929. Original paper boards. 7 x 12 inches. 58 pages. Album from teacher who worked at Pearsall School 1922-23 Eddy School 1923-24 Baker School 1924-25 Country Farm School 1925-26 Dye School 1927-28 and Dorr School 1927-29. In addition to photos includes 32 pieces of ephemera including drawings invitations valentines and numerous press clippings with updates on the various schools. Most of the photos identify the school and include group photos of the children. These one-room schools had few pupils often under 20 in the entire school so teachers had to be prepared to instruct students at multiple levels. Many of the group photos show children in working clothes such as overalls and simple cotton dresses. In some photos it's clear that children are barefoot while others taken in cooler months show them bundled up in jackets and work boots. In addition to photos of students posing by their schools there are images of special presentations and students at leisure. One image shows the children all dressed in capes as part of a musical performance; another shows two students and the teacher riding bicycles on a sunny afternoon. There are 47 individual photos of students from Dorr and Loomis Schools with their first and last names handwritten below. One particularly striking image of a young boy Ronald Bishop comes with additional information on his fate: "Killed by car". Some photos identify community members such as "Nora and Hazel" and "Mr. Barnes" who appears to be a delivery person in his official cap and horse-drawn buggy. <br/><br/>Newspaper clippings on the various schools provide updates on the institutions and students' progress. "Hazel M. Hummel Teacher. Our school closed for vacation with Christmas program at the schoolhouse. After the program.the ladies ten treat dus to popcorn balls and candy which we enjoyed very much. Santa Clause was there and we all received a generous share of the presents with with the tree was loaded." "We now have an enrollment of 13.Our percentage of attendance was 98 last month. We went flowering last week and found adder-tongues May flowers and a few lilies. The with graders have finished all their books and are reviewing now in preparation for the examination next week.Last Friday we celebrated Willard and Lucille Youngs' birthday with a potluck dinner at the school-house." "There are now 21 pupils.the primary grade pupils have made brownies lanterns and witches in the kettle for Hallowe'en seat work. The older grades made Hallowe'en posters for Friday's art class. The eight grade agriculture class have collected and mounted in a scrapbook the leaves of the trees in our neighborhood. We all enjoyed our vacation Thursday and Friday as Miss Hummel attended the institute." This is a clear reference to ongoing training sessions for the teacher to stay up to date on new pedagogy and educational topics showing the formalization and training required for women to pursue this profession. Very good condition. unknown books
