1890536821890. Photograph 7 x 4 1/2 inches affixed to larger mount picturing in the foreground an obelisk on which are engraved the names of the victims a grove of trees to the rear. The monument actually memorialized those killed at the 19 May 1858 "Marais des Cygnes Massacre" the "last significant act of violence" in the "Bleeding Kansas" conflict; on that day a group of marauders from Missouri kidnapped 11 unarmed free-staters and killed five of them an act widely condemned in the national press and used by John G. Whittier as the subject of a poem. Mount browned and chipped image quite faded in the lower left corner small chip in the left edge. Still a good example. <br/><br/> unknown books

String-bound padded boards in Indonesian batik cloth. 32 sepia-toned photographs glue mounted recto and verso each measuring 6” x 4.25” approx. Minor soil to cloth with touches of wear at corners. Page edges very lightly worn. Sunning at extremities. Tissue guards edge-worn and creased. Photographs generally fine. Near fine overall. <br/><br/>Photo album of an Sumatran likely East tobacco plantation taken by an accomplished and likely professional photographer. Includes crisp and detailed photographs of the fields planting cultivation harvest various processing areas drying etc. buildings landscapes and many striking portraits of workers and other native Indonesians. Laborers much in evidence throughout including several images showing what are likely Chinese immigrant workers more than 300000 emigrated between 1870 and 1930 to work the plantations after tobacco's introduction to Sumatra in the 1860s. The album opens with several individual studio portraits likely the plantation owners or other Sumatran officials suggesting this was assembled with promotional purposes in mind. Nevertheless an intimate look at the tobacco industry in Indonesia around the turn of the century taken by an accomplished photographer. Perhaps more than any other region of the world tobacco remains an integral part of Indonesian life with some of the highest smoking rates anywhere. Therefore an important document in the development of Indonesian culture during the peak years of tobacco production in the region. [Sumatra] hardcover books

Some very light scuffing at spine tips and corners otherwise bindings are fine. Off-setting of photograph onto tissue-guards creating some wonderful ghosts. Clark Street in what was Chicago's fashionable Near North Side. The frame is a bravura creation of rich complexity easier viewed than described. Barnes ca. 1960. <br /><br />Oblong photo album measuring 13 1/2 x 10 inches 340 x 255 mm 12 leaves containing 8 photos each for a total of 96 photos title to front cover written in pencil metal comb binding. <br /><br />This album shows 96 color snapshots of Anthony Cina of South Jersey Bindery Thorofare New Jersey binding a book at the bindery of Richard H. Barnes in Philadelphia. Each snapshot appears within a window measuring 4 1/4 x 2 7/8 inches 103 x 73 mm. The snapshots are neatly and firmly attached. Complete; none missing. <br /><br />According to a handwritten note on the verso of the front cover Philadelphia bookbinder Richard H. Barnes took the photos at his Philadelphia shop 2341 Germantown Avenue. The note also states that the photos are from "circa 1960."<br /><br />We have not been able to find much information about Anthony Cina. However a 1966 newspaper article states: "Anthony Cina leather craftsman and bookbinder of Thorofare will give a demonstration on 'bookbinding and engraving' to graphics arts teachers" during the 48th annual convention of the New Jersey Vocational and Arts Education Association April 1 and 2 1966 at a hotel in Asbury Park. The Daily Record Long Branch New Jersey March 26 1966 page 5. <br /><br />As for Richard Barnes the Philadelphia binder published a book in 1962 "Gilding and Making of Gold Leaf." An interesting look at bookbinding featuring step-by-step photos of the binding process. Complete with no photos missing or damaged. <br /><br />CONDITION: Some soiling and rubbing to the covers slight toning to page edges. Very Good overall. Barnes, Richard H. books
