Alcuni incontri sono stati fatali per il regista. Affinità artistiche, rapporti personali o professionali lo hanno legato a grandi pittori come Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth e, naturalmente, Cézanne; fotografi come Peter Lindbergh, James Nachtwey e Barbara Klemm e registi come Ingmar Bergman, Michelangelo Antonioni, Anthony Mann, Douglas Sirk, Samuel Fuller, Manoel de Oliveira e Yasujiro Ozu, o personalità come Pina Bausch e lo stilista giapponese Yohij Yamamoto. Sono tutti testi scritti per determinate occasioni: una prefazione o un contributo a un catalogo, per esempio, l’articolo per un anniversario o una laudatio (Wenders mette per iscritto i discorsi e le conferenze prima di tenerli).
