26022St. Croix USVI: St. Croix Landmarks Society Axel Ovesen was a Danish photographer who had moved to St. Croix during the Danish period of overseeing the island in the early 20th century; he stayed after his military service and opened a photographic studio which continued for many years. His photographic negatives later became the Ovesen Collection at the St.Croix Landmarks Society in Frederiksted and were available for purchase in various formats. The title of this image is given on the reverse in pencil and also has the Society's stamp; no date is indicated for this printing of the image. Approx. 11" x14" overall size; the central part of the image very sharply taken and printed; with some slight fading out towards the edges. Black Book is comprised of 91 images of male models many of whom he had intimate personal relationships with including his lover Jack Walls. Ken Moody the recipient of this copy was a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology and fitness instructor at a gay-owned gym in New York when he was connected with Mapplethorpe through a mutual friend. "I met him at his studio at 24 Bond Street and we started shooting immediately. He asked me to take off my shirt and I sat in front of the camera. It was then that he produced one of the most perfect photographs that we ever took together.When we met nothing struck me as odd or terribly different or even exceptional about Robert. He just seemed like a nice white man although he was very quiet. He was very very professional and I believe that's probably because I fell outside the category of man that he was attracted to. I knew what his tastes were and I also knew that I was not that.Robert and I shot together over three years - 1983 '84 and '85. I reckon we did it 12 times in each of those years maybe a bit less. I remember reading on the internet that I was his most-photographed subject.I didn't think it was exceptional at the time I had no idea. I just assumed that when a photographer found a subject that they liked they would work with them a lot. I knew that there was chemistry between us. I knew that from the first day. Barnes ca. 1960. <br /><br />Oblong photo album measuring 13 1/2 x 10 inches 340 x 255 mm 12 leaves containing 8 photos each for a total of 96 photos title to front cover written in pencil metal comb binding. <br /><br />This album shows 96 color snapshots of Anthony Cina of South Jersey Bindery Thorofare New Jersey binding a book at the bindery of Richard H. Barnes in Philadelphia. Each snapshot appears within a window measuring 4 1/4 x 2 7/8 inches 103 x 73 mm. The snapshots are neatly and firmly attached. Complete; none missing. <br /><br />According to a handwritten note on the verso of the front cover Philadelphia bookbinder Richard H. Barnes took the photos at his Philadelphia shop 2341 Germantown Avenue. The note also states that the photos are from "circa 1960."<br /><br />We have not been able to find much information about Anthony Cina. However a 1966 newspaper article states: "Anthony Cina leather craftsman and bookbinder of Thorofare will give a demonstration on 'bookbinding and engraving' to graphics arts teachers" during the 48th annual convention of the New Jersey Vocational and Arts Education Association April 1 and 2 1966 at a hotel in Asbury Park. The Daily Record Long Branch New Jersey March 26 1966 page 5. <br /><br />As for Richard Barnes the Philadelphia binder published a book in 1962 "Gilding and Making of Gold Leaf." An interesting look at bookbinding featuring step-by-step photos of the binding process. Complete with no photos missing or damaged. <br /><br />CONDITION: Some soiling and rubbing to the covers slight toning to page edges. Very Good overall. Barnes, Richard H. books
